Name change thread OT cleanup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well it's character more than anything else, but actively producing new content like that certainly helps to get you noticed ;)
If I recall correctly I mentioned to you in a pm about wanting to do a write up of wallace's shoehead catfish when I was able to. Shall I expect to receive the news of my promotion to mod a week after I post it or did my perma ban nuke any chances of becoming a mod? :naughty:

Your thing is goonch catfish right?

I wrote a dwarf puffer guide, can I be a mod now?
Didn't you also write a guide about golden wonder killifish?

I appreciate the enthusiasm gents. I understand that you want to help, but in a community this size, I can't hand out power capriciously. Even though I have carte blanche to do basically anything as I see fit, I still extend the courtesy to my fellow staff before doing so, and even to some very senior non-staff MFKers whom I hold in high regard, when it comes to selecting leadership on this forum.

However, writing stuff about well known, well understood, common species isn't what I'm after. Aim higher. Go after an entire genus. If you can easily find info about it, I'm not interested. A species level post about something unusual that's basically absent from the hobby might get you a sticky, but not promoted. The understanding of the phylogeny of Hydrocynus, Salminus, and Bagarius in this hobby are entirely because of me. Those are entire genera that were poorly understood or not understood at all; not just a common hobby species. The level of work involved in that spans years, and in the case of Bagarius that research inspired a legitimate scientific research project that I am unfortunately not in a position to help with. My work with Hydrocynus has resulted in uncovering a new species that I hope to describe, name and publish by this time next year. My current work is with Brachyplatystoma (which has admittedly moved on without me, but there's still no definitive hobbyist level article about them that I'm aware of), pike characins and (shudder) wolf fish. The Brachy article is at about 90%, as it has been for years.

It was the research that went into these subjects that got the attention of neoprodigy neoprodigy and Oddball Oddball for them to give me a chance. It was that multi year level of dedication I've shown to the website, to include single handedly keeping it from failing after the Great Server Crash of 2015 (while not even being involved with the hobby at the time), that allowed me to serve as Li and Phil's protege in being the new site manager. I view Hendre Hendre as being something of my protege in that he seems to be starting down the same steps that I took in dedication to this website, with even fewer new frontiers to explore.

Well my response was more along the lines of a joke however I do appreciate the in depth response you gave as it has helped me better understand a few things and to reinforce my plans for the future.

Yeeeeaaaahhh I got a text from another staff member saying that your comment was likely a joke. I was like "oh, oops"

Unfortunately for me, I've already stuck that booger on the wall, so I can't in good conscience delete it. ??‍♂️

Gotta admit, I did find the requests unusual, but you have pm'd me before, so I took it at face value

Now that I think about it I have made a joke about waiting for someone to offer me a mod position and now I am not too sure if they all were acknowledged as being a joke as well lol.

Anyway I would hate it if you were to delete that post chicx as I truly do find it helpful as I wish to provide information of the highest quality and to do my own research and work and get it published eventually. I can’t half ass it and expect it to be seen the way I want it to be seen. Posts like yours help me to improve myself and I welcome them as even if they are not what I want to hear or they will be insanely difficult they end up making me a better fish keeper and get me closer to my goal.

I appreciate your understanding.

I'm not going to delete that post, I'm just a little embarrassed that I misread the situation badly enough to have posted it lol
