Where's the hobby taking you?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For me I am cruising along on a flat plateau. I have 5 tanks....150, 135, 75, 55 and 20 gallon. I have my big cichlid tank, active community tank, my archer fish tank, my breeding tank of t. Maculipinnis and then the 20 long which is basically my qt tank but right now is a beta tank lol. I don't have any plans to change stock as I'm happy with the variety I have and tend to keep my fish for the length of their lifespan. I do want to get a couple more archers as I am down to only one now. And the mention of flagtails reminds me how much i want to get another one. ?

I had a 75, 125, 180, 400, and a 2000 gallon Koi pond and things were going well. Had 4 Dovii growing out, 2 Indo Dats, 8 Nile Tilapia, and a 15" Jardini as well. One night, I had an unexpected power surge and all of my heaters died which killed all of my fish pretty fast (tanks were in the garage and it was in the winter). Lost a pair of my first stingrays a couple months prior which was awesome as well. I've still got a couple koi and catfish in my pond but I shut all the tanks down and I'm pretty much done with the hobby for a little bit. Pretty burned out right now. When I get back into it, I'm not sure what direction I'll go in. Maybe predatory, or brackish.....not sure though. KingofDIY and this site are keeping me interested at this point

My goal is modest and mostly dictated by my new entry into the hobby.

Long term I would like to have a 125 for an oscar and another 125 for a few piranhas, just because.

I'm sure these goals and aspirations will change the more I get into the hobby. Biotope correct tanks would be fun to explore but my experience with planted aquariums will need to be developed.
Nothing wrong with Oscars or P's. If I had the room I'd love to have a serrasalmus manueli. Biotope tanks are awesome but I don't think I have the kind of dedication. But good luck to you man, I hope to see you sharing your tanks.

Breeding Maculipinnis is cool. I personally would like to have a breeding project too, though I'd ike to try Haitiensis, Gephyrumor the Red Morph Dovii. I usually change up my stock but I keep my faves or ones that have sentimental value to me like my Trachy cats. I am hoping though to nail down a long term stock. And can I ask what kind of Archers? Clouded or Brackish?

Wow I'm really sorry for your loss man. I'm glad that your interest in the hobby isn't totally gone though. I'm looking forward to see which way you go when you do come back.

Just got a 40 breeder and two more 29 gallons, going to try my hand at breeding soon since I'm not going any younger. Combine that with the fact that I have three 20 gallon highs and at least two 10 gallons hiding somewhere in the house which all will work quite nicely for breeding. Now I just have to get more sponge filters and another air pump or two.

Good luck man. Breeding is one the directions I want to go. I actually want to try my hand at breeding a couple of fish that haven't been bred in captivity as of yet.

Very cool, I like archers in general but Blythii are definitelly my faves.

Care to name these fish or shall they remain a mystery?

I bought my 75 just about a year ago and felt that it would be sufficient and fill my desire for a "big" aquarium, but now I'm strongly considering buying or building a 240-300 gallon setup once my gf and I move in a couple years. I'd really like to try some of the smaller stingrays and bigger pleco species and I never really viewed them as attainable until now.

Also recently been learning a lot more about medicating as I deal with a ****show of an anchor worm infestation. It's definitely been a year of learning for me.

Long term breeding my goal is to breed the following.
shorttail nurse shark
Well I just found out ora is breeding them

You can find them on various sites now.

So far I've only found the two sites besides ora themselves selling them.

I will admit that it took the wind out of my sails for a moment but it matters not for they breed them for profit while I shall breed them to get a poorly known dwarf shark to be better known by hobbyists and to try to replace the nurse shark with the short tail nurse shark in the aquarium trade. On the bright side this means that I won't have to search as hard as before to find the breding stock.

Sorry I missed yours and Plec123s reply. Some of the fish I'd like to breed that haven't been bred AFAIK in captivity are my Trachycorystes which I've gotten closer to then anyone else again AFAIK, with my pics being featured in Planetcatfish of my cats entwined with my males anal fin pressed against into the female.

I'd also like to try breeding some Doradidae such as Dorbignyi, Dorsalis and maybe Brachiatus. Other then that I wanted to try breeding some Crenicichla and Silver Dollars.

I'm sorry to hear about the anchor worm, I wish you good luck with it and your future upgrades.

Very cool bro. Definitely a fish I had never heard of and one you've sparked my interest in. Can't wait to see and hear more about it from you.
