How to optimize my HOB filter?

easier than all the above .. buy *4* ac 70 sponges and double sponge each side .. i couldn't believe how well it works

I think it will be to small for my emporor compartments could I order a big filter sponge sheet and just cut it to size?

I had the same filter and was honestly happy when it died so I had an excuse to replace it with an aquaclear. The design is inefficient and it just felt like a scheme to sell cartridges. IMO the best way to set it up is 1 ac70 sponge placed vertically on each side of the intake and mesh bags full of as much media as you can fit in each end. If you want extra fine mechanical filtration you can wrap 3 sides of the sponge with poly so it stays in place (leave the side closest to the intake clear).

my bad , i got distracted somehow, i thought you had a pen 350.. but , i'm sure you could grab some sponges intended for a sump and cut to size.. sorry for the mix up...

yes.. i personally don't like the thin blue / white sheets as much as actual sponges , but they will work as well (just wrap them around an old cartridge frame)...

ok then that is what I will do I dont really like the blue white sheets either so im glad that was the better option thank you
