gambusia holbrooki or affinis
i have a school that has eaten newborn ataeniobius (they're born a little less than an inch long)
not sure if they'd rip up convict fry though
a single dwarf pike would work imo, they're naturally the main predators of apisto fry
miurus puffer is also on the table imo
single green sunfish too

you are right, and it looks like it can tolerate a higher ph as well. Looks like a single Regani is the way to go.

So it would really be ok by itself in a planted 20h with lots of hiding spaces? Would I need dither fish to ever see it?
I have some tiger barbs I could throw in there.

A decently planted tank is enough with 1 cave/pot/pipe. See how it does as you throw guppy fry in there tirst

The dwarf pike is going to be just fine and you will see it plenty. I like regani but the comp will be just fine. I was thinking bumblebee cat, but I wasn't sure if it would eat the convicts fast enough. Pike killi Belonesox was a good too. I wish I thought about that. If you have ever seen a big one they are pretty impressive. The pike cichlid will hunt fry out of every crevice, the Belonesox will wait just outside of the cover and destroy anything that ventures out.

yeah i was reading about Belonesox its a live bearer and a Poeciliid like a guppy, looks cool but I like the look and behavior of the dwarf pike cichlids even more.

Thanks!
