Shy stage for American cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A lot of factors that go into it. Duanes gave a good run-down. Overhanging decor and "dither fish" usually help the situation. Some fish will be more shy than others of the same species as well. Can you post a picture of the tank.

The flowerhorn will need solitary as it will not tolerate the presence of others. Please don't buy GMO. The Dovii will most likely need to be housed alone as well. The Amph may be ok with house mates but not if they are the fh or D.
What is GMO by the way?

I have read others state that theirs have or are currently. DMD123 DMD123
lol, yep fishguy1978 fishguy1978 has heard my complaints about my Trimac male. Super shy at 10”+ and I feel like there are definitely physiological issues involved. I felt as if the 75g was too small so I upgraded to a 90g and it helped a bit. Added large decor for it to hide behind if it felt threatened, again it helped a little. Addeded a temporary tankmate/target fish helped a little.

But these things I still deal with. The tank is in a low traffic area (garage) and the fish gets startled when I come in. I must turn on the light so the fish can see me or else the movements in the shadows freaks it out.

Anyway here is my current shy fish

Mymain tank is a 300g in my living room. It has a high amount of traffic and I have never had a shy fish in it. They see people all the time and always are outgoing.

The set up in your garage is awesome. I wish I could pull that off here in the Midwest. I've got 2 1/2 car garage with a 21 ft ceiling . I would have a ridiculous sized tank/ sitting area

That’s an awesome looking setup you have! Yah my tank is in the living room right in the middle of everything. He seems the most confident when the tank lights are on but the house is dark. Hoping it’s just a phase.

Duane's point about sub-12" cichlids being shy in the wild due to predation is new to me. Makes a lot of sense.

I think there is a difference between fish that have been in captivity for a number of generations and fish that are closer to wild-caught too. I know a lot of people like credentials on their fish as to catch location and F1, F2 etc, which is pretty cool, even if they are shy.

Even cooler in my opinion, are fish with outgoing personalities that are always up at the front and top of the tank because they want to be fed by human beings. We get to make the call, and for myself, the personality trumps catch location.
