Smoking hammers your respiratory. I like my lungs and <65 resting heart. I saw it creep down to 53 while sitting the other day. Almost time for new years fitness resolutions!

It's a funny old thing the respiratory system. Smoking will really hamper any attempt to perform even low level exercise, but even an extremely sedentary non smoker will find that their respiratory system just can't cut it when they start exercising. It's one of those bodily functions that needs constant usage. Before I started year round exercise i was inactive during winter and when I started back up again in spring it would kill me, for a couple of weeks anyway.

The difference between a smoker and an inactive non smoker is that the non smoker will very quickly reach a level where they can comfortably attain a rigorous level of activity, whereas the smoker will forever be severely hampered, unless they kick the habit, and then they too, in time, will get to a good level, unless the damage to their lungs is too far gone.

It definitely has to stay in use, even moderate exercise will keep your lungs in tune. Since I'm not swimming or playing hockey anymore, I can't run as fast, but I can still do some light 5-7km runs on a regular basis without issue

Just back from the first gym visit since 23d december, had a very indulgent few days since then with too much food, drinks and smokes.
Yesterdya I spent a lot of time walking around the local lake with the kid and started the smoking cut back again which was a decent transition from excess to health again, today was weights and the next step of laying off the ciggies.
Still have some leftover turkey so a nice high protein healthy sandwich and yoghurt for lunch I think.

The next couple of days are not of much importance for you really. Work on the "new you" will start in earnest on Jan 1st when that new years resolution kicks in. I know you're going to find it tough, it'll be a long slog, and yes there'll be days when you feel like shat and your cravings will be driving you nuts. Honestly, rather than keeping us posted on this thread with your progress I think you should start an ogertron3000 fitness thread on Jan 1st. I'll be following you, offering encouragement. And who knows, at the end of 2021 you might be a bronzed godlike adonis, just like me! :liar: lol.

Im 13 yr old at 5'6.5~ and 105lbs. i was very skinny a couple years ago at 5'1 and 70lbs until i started cycling. i(when its not cold) cycle 10 miles a day and thats the only sport that i really do unless you count fencing. but fencing is just two people in Armour trying to stab each other.

Keep up the cycling young man, the benefits are immeasurable both for your physical health and mental well being. If you've got the right clothing the cold shouldn't be an issue. It's when it's wet it becomes miserable on a bike.

Haven't been running or cycling, but doing tonnes of walking on the farm while hunting, ant searching or just milling around!

I think having a thread dedicated to me is a bit too indulgent. I was thinking every month a photo of me in my underwear so everyone could see the progress but it may be too disturbing for the younger members of the forum!

Really, since the gyms reopened mid november I have been doing alright, besides the overindulgence at xmas but thats not too bad as it is the season to be jolly.
Excercise and fairly diet have always been part of my life for the last few years, even kept it up during the lockdown months, but the smoking is the biggest issue by far. Once that is done and dusted I think I will be in good shape for someone my age. My current thinking is the smokes are cancelling out all the benefits from the other healthy habits as get older. I Ive had a good run with them and everything must come to an end. Ive given up a all my other vices and rarely drink alcohol so this is the final piece of the puzzle.
If I had a health report card it would most likely read like my old school reports "ogertron does well but with more effort and focus he could do so much better"

The reality is I am 45 and have a 5 year old kid and want to be healthy and still active in the next 20 years or so. Smoking isnt going to help withn this, once shes her through her 20s and im in my 70s I will go back to being a decadent pot head and watch my adonis body fade away as my work will be done!

Sod the younger members, what about my old eyes!

My missus could have uttered those very words about me....obviously she doesn't call me ogertron, that would be uncomfortably weird, lol.
