Flowerhorn tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would say add a background (preferably blue) to the tank. Use some media from other tank to cycle your tank.

Flowerhorns look varies a lot from fish to fish, so do choose patiently and take your time. Where are you located? I might be able to recommend some seller if any is closer.

Ok yeah I’ll try and find a background. I’m in Pennsylvania.

a lot of flowerhorn keepers prefer bare bottom with little to no decoration the reason being that if a flowerhorn gets even the smallest of scratches from the decorations it could get infected. And because of inbreeding, and being a hybrid they have VERY weak immune systems. So there is a good chance of even death.
Never really noticed any weaker immune systems in mine atleast. Honestly I think it's more along the lines of them getting more cosmetic damage and them being more prone to scars then most other fish. Least to say ya can't really win a competition if your FH looks like it just got out of a 3 round cage match lol.

I will say tho that FH's are very accident prone and no matter what as long as there is an open wound there will always be a chance for infection. So while I won't say FH's have weaker immune systems, I will atleast that that they are more likely then most to get an infect just due to their self destructive habits.

Darker substrate= darker =FH,Keep decor to the minimal that piece of driftwood it taking up too much space. As Ruturaj Ruturaj said a blue background would be good ime it makes their colours pop.Using established media will help cycle your tank faster.

+1,Most FH don't have any problems with their immune systems but it is showing up in some strains because of the heavy inbreeding going on and the gene pool becoming smaller.

Agree. There imune system looks good, some line bred fish have deformities that mostly are culprit, mainly large belly.

Even some youtubers have been fueling the trend for this deformity they think it's 'cute' and get FH with huge bellies i think this happens mostly in SB strains most of these fish don't live over 3.The organs literally mash together because there's no more room.I don't get why someone would get a fish that has a football on it's head and can't even control it's balance when swimming and to add to that - has a literal beer belly lol.
