Guppies and shrimp

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They are definitely compatible, I’ve seen shrimp with bettas and puffers, so guppies should be better. Cherries and ghosts will work with enough of them and enough hiding spots. Amanos or vipers are probably a good bet. Dwarf crayfish would be cool as well.

Ok do you know the estimate cost of the air pump and the sponge filter?

I had a guppy / endler and cherry shrimp tank setup for a few years. Never had an issue with this. I'm sure some of the larger guppies and endlers were able to pick off some shrimp fry, but not enough to make a difference. Mine was also a 10gal loaded with java moss, java fern and anubia. When the 10gal started leaking from a seal, I put everything in a bucket and gave it away. The shrimp bread so much I'd have to net batches of them out. Same with the fish.

Wow that's would I would like to have. How many shrimp and guppies did you start out with? Did you feed your shrimp (or just let them eat guppy poop)?

Oh you definitely need to feed them food. Nothing survives on poop.

I started years prior with 10 RCS that I bought from a long gone LFS for $1/ea. For me, the RCS in the "right" setup were like parasites. If kept in a setup where the fish couldn't readily eat them, they'd almost overpopulate unless I netted some out from time to time. I gave many away over the years and fed many to my fish that would gobble them. I'm totally out of them now since I gave the last away a year or so ago.

Ok any tips for me as im gonna buy the tank soon?
Like what substrate?
what specific plants?
what food?

For planted or non-planted, I prefer the smallest grain gravel you can find that's not sand. For me, sand is just too much of a hassle unless you absolutely need it. I prefer a mix of natural and black if you can find it, or just natural. That's a personal preference thing.

For plants, it depends on what you have access to and what you are setup for. You don't need fancy lighting for plants, but you do need LED or fluorescent lighting. Java moss is the easiest IMO, along with java fern and anubia. None of them are rooting plants. They grow 'feelers' that grab onto things.

For food, my shrimp ate what ever flake food or sinking pellets or wafers the fish were eating. Nothing fancy.
