Why are platinum bichir not farmed?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Albinism is a (recessive) trait, being platinum is not a trait.

The platinum color is recessive trait also, but it's a different recessive gene than the albino gene. So if you had bred two platinums, then all of the babies would be platinum.

I have heard the opposite from some other people, so I am not sure you are correct.

What have you heard...please share. I’m also curious since I have several platinum bichirs of both sexes.
From what ive heard and seen from other breeders “not bichirs” but other platinum fish. It dont mean that you have both platinum parent you’ll have platinum babies, you’ll only have 3%-10% getting a platinum babies, ive seen it on rays and aro.

Maybe you heard that if you breed a platinum and regular brown bichir, then all of their babies will all look normal brown, but they will have the hidden recessive platinum gene in them. So if you breed those normal looking but hidden platinum gene babies back to the platinum parent, then half the babies will look normal and half will be platinum. Then if you breed those platinum babies to each other or to the original platinum parent, then 100% of the babies will be platinum. The platinum gene in fish is definitely classed as recessive, and that's what animal breeders do to get a recessive gene trait that they want to keep and breed, if they are starting with only one specimen of an animal with the recessive gene they want.
