African Biotope - 80 gallon frag

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you know, the idea of a puffer tank got me thinking of an all African tank., and I think it could be quite nice with fish like gardneri killifish, congo tetras, kribensis, maybe a Mormyrid of some sort and some smaller Synodontis to go with the puffer.

I’m not sure I have enough mental strength to do that

I don't think it would be that hard. The kribensis, killifish, congos and some Synodontis species are all farmed/ captive bred and should really low maintenance (easy to feed and hardy). The puffer or the Mormyrid would be the hardest to keep.

No I mean I’m not mature enough for that lol I want larger and meaner stuff

Murius congo puffer?

I think I’m gonna stick with the spotted Congo, they’re big enough to not be prey and not mean enough to attack other fish from what I’ve read. The only fish I’d be concerned about with the puffer is the butterfly fish since they’re a bit stationary and have longer fins

Schoutodini are gonna be fine with the butterfly. I’d worry about the tetras actually, they are evil.

The syno pictured above looks like a genuine species to me, could be schoutedeni but I am not proficient enough to say it couldn't be some other species. If you wanted to know for sure, I'd post on Planet Catfish or wait for experts here.

Schoutedeni exhibit somewhat variable appearance https://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=350

My story is this:

The Congo group of 4 (previously 5, but died due to a suspicious attack), killed 4 out of the 5 new additions; all of them the same species! They also bully my Delhezi, and end up bending back his fins:

Hmm.. assuming they are a little more confident as a group versus solo. Regardless I believe I’ll be adding the schoudeteni last but that is good to know your experience with them. All of the ones I’ve seen available have been closer to 3-4 inch range, basically full adults
