Deadeye’s Amazon Puffer Thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Huey has seemed to have gotten some kind of eye infection. He had some puffer bite marks (small white circles) and a cloudy eye, so I assume there was a fight.
Keeping the water clean, hope that helps. I wouldn’t think twice about it if puffers weren’t so notoriously susceptible to disease.

It’s been one month already!
They have been great. Very well behaved and got accustomed to tank life very well. They are good at eating. Still working on getting Dewey to touch the repashys though...
I still have no evidence of them eating snails either.
Huey still has that eye problem, but the whiteness has receded a bit and is concentrated on one area. The inflammation is completely gone. I’m currently running melafix. Those bite marks are still there too. I should probably get a pic for documentation.
Still very little aggression from the tankmates. Nothing more than some chasing, which I expected, but the puffers are fast and stand their ground when they have to (and go for some fin shots when they are bored).
Now if only I could train them to eat algae off my rocks. Then I could kill two birds with one stone...

I read “in nature they eat aufwuchs”. So far they may peck at a plant or surface, probably looking for something else though. Lots of algae to choose from, including a nasty cyano outbreak. I’ll definitely make a whole thing on puffers eating algae if they do. That would be almost as good as breeding them.

There is definitely noticeable growth on the puffers since I got them. I’m guessing around 0.5 inches per month seems right. I’ll have to see if they stick to that (maybe it’s just how much they eat). It doesn’t seem like there is much info on growth rate out there for these guys.
When I got them they looked a lot like dwarf puffers in shape, they are elongating now and getting many more of the SAP characteristics (weird back, longer than wide, etc). Striping has come in really well too.

Very interesting.
Is there any noticeable growth in their teeth till now?
Yes. Mostly because I haven’t gotten them enough crunchy foods.
The teeth are growing much slower than I expected though. They have that classic buck teeth look now, that wasn’t as noticeable when I got them.
