29 Gallon Community Tank Growout Thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I added the last few fish. She wanted a pair of guppies now, which could be used to give for lfs credit or something like that. The male is harrasing the female, which I am guessing is breeding behavior. We got 6 Neon Tetras, which look really good! We have been looking for Amano Shrimp, but they sell out SUPER quick, so there is none around here.

very nice aquarium

my guppies always die
any tips for keeping them?
Well, I have had them for 4 days...and they are still alive...so just feed them, idk. Guppies are pretty hardy fish. The fish that would be most likely to die in her care would be the Guppies, but I have tried to center the stocking around hardy fish, in hopes she does what she needs to do with them, which so far, she has been doing a remarkable job at. She even showed interest in water changes, and my 55g tank. She even likes the outdoor patio ponds now! She has been spending more time in her room, which is where the tank is, hence the purple walls. Honestly, I think she likes her small portion of the the hobby.

Guppies tend to need more females than males so the one doesn’t get harassed to much (like other livebearers). I think that the serious inbreeding resulted in certain strains that are just not hardy and don’t live well. Some are better than others. I think that hard, alkaline water helps as well and even a bit of salt is good.
For neons watch out for neon tetra disease, it wrecks tetra schools.
