It's finally happening!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Which part are you talking about? Talking to them? I really did. We only talked about the cost, tho.

Awesome.
You may want to rethink your idea about liner placement. Stream flow rapidly and will buildup tons of algae. It needs slope and built up edges to not overflow. This is the number one cause for water lost. Never build pond edges below grade. This will allow run off to go into the pond and this is why the pond will lift. The pressure outside is greater than the inside. If anything you should have the pond water level at or higher than grade.
People with sump experience will understand the idea of overflowing a small sump and water level.
I suggest the following for happy fish keeping:
Bottom drain
Skimmer
1/4 hp or larger pump with leaf basket
Bead filter
25W or 40W UV
2" dia piping (4" or larger for gravity system)
Electrical power (outlets)

Price the above. You're going to find out it is not cheap. More than what most people spend on a nice fish tank.

what is the alternative to pond liner for a naturalistic pond? Im just curious
Concrete, if you can cover it up.
Awesome.

Thank you sooo much! You practically answered all my questions! I’ll relay this to father dearest.

Im going to Poway on Sunday to talk to some guys about building. And my grandpa is coming out to plan with us the same day. He lives relatively far away, and works most days, so it is hard to find time to plan, and Sunday is the earliest he can come.

My grandpa came today. He talked about everything with us. My dad is convinced of 2 things which my grandpa brought up

#1

A retaining wall. My grandpa decided to bring up the retaining wall. I liked the idea of underground pond, but a retaining wall, I don’t really like those. He is also convinced he can do this without cement and STILL make it look good, which I don’t think will happen

#2

The stream is a bad idea. Tbh, I think I would’ve been out of luck there. He liked that idea, but he decided it was too much. I was trying to convince him, but he decided he didn’t like it. So now he wants to do the koi pond, and then next summer build the native pond.

So big changes.

We find something to use as a retaining wall. The wall will be 17-18 inches tall. We can put the pond liner in between the stones of the retaining wall. Then, I can dig 2-2.5 feet down. I can build shelves. He likes the idea of plants and little dither-like fish. The amount of soil is actually insane. Without the retaining wall, it would be 9 cubic yards of dirt. 2,500lbs of dirt PER CUBIC YARD. So it would be easier that way.

What do you think of this update?

Classic...Rattus will win.

Ngl, The whole time I’ve lived here, I have never seen a rat, raccoon, possum, or mouse. But Ill let him know, he is convinced that the liner is too thick for rats to chew through. So that isn’t true?

Rats/rodents like to scurry around at night, so unless you have motion activated lights and happen to be up late at night, you won't see them. Of all the places to see a rat, I have seen a couple running along the top of my fence and it was only after I put a motion detection light on the fence itself.

Didn't you read his MFK post about rats chewing through 45 mil pond liner, below the water line?
