New tank ( I already have it this time)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Never been a fan of smaller cichlids other than for their color. Where are you located. If close you can have my flowerhorn if interested
Why would u get the red devil if you already have a fh? If you want to sell it or whatever, why would u buy it in the first place? Didn’t you say you’re bonding with it?

Another thread and another fish, surprise, surprise. Your decisions on the fish you keep are irresponsible IMO. What are you doing with all your other fish? Is your 55g even cycled for your new fish? I'm gonna beat a dead horse, sorry folks. You really need to do more research on the fish you keep. A 55g is way to small for a 14" Midevil. You might as well get a Dovii for the 29g. I would have just got the 75g like you said you were going to get. I don't even know why I made a post because this scenario is just going to happen again and again.

Don’t know how we came to the conclusion that it’s a hybrid red devil but okay. I’m not saying it is a hybrid I’m not saying it’s not. I’m saying that after a night of extra research on identifying the species I’ve found it to be a true red devil. Just my opinion though. A red devil can stay in a 50g for like at the bare minimum although not ideal but I know people that have kept Red Devils in a 40g with a long healthy life. Just going off of my findings and opinions but Im confident that it’s a red devil not Midas or hybrid. This will be extremely frowned upon by all of you but I’ve done it maybe times in the past and have never had a problem with it but I took the water from the 40g and a bit from the flowerhorns and put it in the 55g along with a bit of new treated water. I basically treat it like a water change in a way but the water is being changed to a new tank. I’ve done it before and have never had any issue. I have the flowerhorn and red devil cichlid in the 55 and they have both selected their own territory and will occasionally get mad at the other for swimming too close but for the most part they don’t mind being tank mates.

The fish are in the 55 gallon tank???

Yes. I know I just got it set up but I have never had any problems in doing this before
I’ll let others chime in. But don’t think you’re supposed to do that problems or not. If I remember correctly that is. But what would u add water to a fish tank that a fish just died in?

It’s just what I’ve always grown up doing so didn’t think anything of it.

Water does not cycle a tank. We’ve beaten that one like a dead horse on many threads though.
I only say it’s a hybrid because with them being captive bred and easy to misidentify, somewhere down the line this hybridization is common. Doesn’t mean it is or isn’t, just likely a hybrid. Without pics of ancestors up to the wild ones, there isn’t a sure way to tell.
Time to start placing bets on who comes out alive though. Devil or fh? My money is on the devil.

What you should’ve done is keep the fh in the tub. Not get the red devil. Watch the water in the 40 and start to cycle the 55. Your 40 and 55 would be empty which I know drives you crazy. But it’s for the better of the fish. After a week put a dither in the 49 to see how he does. If he lives great! If not you may need to clean all decor, gravel and get new water and cycle that too. Can we see pics of the tank?
