What’s the trick for good photos?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Was going to add that the POTM rules do let you crop a picture. This to me is a HUGE impact on how a picture looks.

Take this pic of my old arrowhead puffer. Kind of a cool picture but I would never submit this. You can clearly see the tank frame in it.

But doing nothing else but cropping it widescreen... It has more appeal and I would consider submitting this one.

I was going to add be aware of things in the picture. Here is another pic I would never submit. why? look closely...

You can clearly see my heater in the back right corner. While this is a cool picture, to me its not a POTM pic. It would require major work to remove the heater from the pic and to me and I believe the rules is a no, no. This is beyond a simple cropping.

I got a good pic of my beardie eating last night. Thought I’d share. It shows a lot of the textures which I like about it. I have an iPhone 8 I believe 8CAFE9B1-2496-4CBC-BE4E-75D0798DB815.jpeg

Like above poster said, lighting! A DSLR camera will get u great pics straight from the camera.

Some new phones are looking fantastic camera wise, but the flexibility a DSLR gives is bonkers. Editing is also important to help bring out the best in a photo. Here is a before and after of straight out of the camera, and edited:

I see your point, and celebrate the spirit of submitting only what you consider the best possible pictures. However, heater or not showing, the picture you would never submit is still excellent and worthy of being submitted, and worthy of winning as well if it proves to be the most voted on that particular month. Could it be better? yes, but it is quite good nonetheless.
Alternatively, one can take the very strict approach of submitting only the very best for such events (nothing wrong with that), thus elevating the overall quality of the site's competition, but still posting (thus sharing) other pictures in regular posts. Otherwise one would not be contributing to regular and inspiring posts, and depriving the readership of good images that they will enjoy no matter what.

Is editing for brighter lighting/color allowed for the POTM?

I must say, you all are taking some absolutely stunning photos! I’ve got my work cut out for me!
