Flowerhorn growout

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don’t agree with either of these. I held a very young flowerhorn in a 50 for a few months and I never thought it was big enough for him. ESPECIALLY knowing how big they do get. He didn’t even have a developed kok. Now I feel as a fish keeper if you don’t see anything wrong with having a certain fish in a certain sized tank that is either to small or dirty. Then you just don’t care enough about the fish’s good. Because realistically if you DID care you would understand “wow my fish is suffering due to these bad circumstances” the thing about breeding is stupid if you ask me because those people are doing it for money. Not the fish’s sake and not for the health of them. Just that bread.
Gonna have to agree with Kolton13 Kolton13 here. A smaller breed of flowerhorn that doesn’t get over 8-10 inches in a 55, fine. But one that has already been identified to get bigger than the tank is wide is asking for problems. You can’t say that you want to keep the fish for its whole lifespan and then go ahead and do something that would dramatically shorten it. Just doesn’t work that way.
Of course I agree it’s not the most ideal situation. But please… almost every single fish he has owned you all have asked him to return it. I get that the fish may not be suitable for the tank, but isn’t it a bit too much? The store must be wondering why every 2 weeks he returns a newly bought fish. Put yourself in his shoes, won’t you feel extremely fed up?
but Rtc/tsn Rtc/tsn do your research before buying the fish, not going to the store and questioning the people there if it’s suitable for your tank. They may not tell you the correct information to try and sell a quick bucks or don’t even know themselves

We ask him to return for the better for him and the fish. Why would I be fed up if I’m making mistakes and people are helping me?

I’ve been in the boat of hearing harsh advice I didn’t like and getting fed up. I chose to not listen and lost the fish. In the long run, I’m a better fish keeper because of the failure, and look back and value the advice, as it was 100% true. I would be just as harsh to anyone that was as dumb as I was. Better to be annoyed than depressed.

Caveden Caveden understands me lol. I will start doing more research on fish that I buy before I buy them (I’m not buying anymore fish for a while unless it’s to use as bait or feeders) the flowerhorn I’ve been doing a lot of research on him and yea I do get fed up a lot but I know it’s all to help me.

So what I am understanding is this:

You get a fish, put it in a crappy tank, and then it dies. You had an ’attachment’ to it for the few hours it was alive. Then, you go to the store and get another fish. And then you repeat it.

Nobody wants you to stop fish keeping, we just want you to not abuse fish. Just listen to users. You do not consult people with your decisions. You talk about how you think this fish is awesome, everyone congratulates you on the find, and then everything turns upside down. You here most people say “Give it away”, and then you hear a random person that only read the title and they say “Congrads, great find, good luck”, and you listen to them. You do not acknowledge users like jjohnwm jjohnwm who has been keeping fish since forever ago, and has a ton of experience.

When I joined, I was like you. Eager, and an annoying inconvenience. Trust me, if you are ever going to stay on mfk and somehow manage to not get banned, respect would what you would want. If you ask almost every single mfk’er, you do not deserve the slightest bit of respect. To get respect, LISTEN TO PEOPLE. Stop and take a break. Look at your tank for example. It looks horrid. It is on a tightrope, and the tightrope is sawing every second the fish is in their. When it breaks, the fish dies. Then it sets itself up again and again. Everybody - experienced and inexperienced - is telling you to give your fish away. You DO NOT have the recourses. You have said “I’m working on it” over and over again. How has that worked out for you, eh? Let’s be real here, everyone knows you are “working on it”, but you aren’t going fast enough. Every fish you’ve had either died under your keeping, or you sold because your lack of research.

Lets see what you have to say about this message
Put yourself in my situation that I’m in right now. Honestly don’t think I’m in any situation that I need to worry about for a while but you guys all think it’s urgent. That’s about all I have to say to this message. I mean really guys all I need to do is rehome the red devil and get the flowerhorn in the 55 when that’s ready. The flowerhorn isn’t ideal for the 55 but it’ll work for some time and will eventually get a larger tank to itself.

Nobody knows what the future holds. Why get something and say “someday I’ll get the bigger tank” when instead you can have something that will thrive in what you have. Less stress on the fish and yourself.

When I bought the FH I knew I was getting something larger soon so planned on that homing it for life but wasn’t expecting the FH to be a red dragon and grow much larger than expected

The thing thats urgent is that you have two tanks a 55g and a 40g and two fish that will both get over 12". Also it sounds like you did not know what a Red dragon was how are you supposed to care for your fish if you dont know what it is? I agree that failure is important for change and success but so is advice and you dont seem to be taking any. You did a good thing by re homing the RTC/TSN and your aro. Just some advice try to find a fish that you like and do research before going to the store. If your store does not have it then call around. Its a great way to find amazing stores.

I know what a red dragon is I always have but I didn’t know that’s the type of FH it was when I bought it

Just my $0.02 ,if you keep up with water changes a 55g(48" x 13" x 21") will be fine for a FH.The largest FH i've seen was a 12" red dragon imported from Thailand.I believe it took around 5 years to get to that size.My buddy received it at received it at 3".You've got time, when the fish starts cramped start looking for an upgrade or give it away,it's as simple as that.Fish don't feel complex human emotions.
