How big should I go?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im not trying to pick on anyone, just asking cause alot of ppl think of us poly keeper abuses polys cause we have alot of them and they dont understand anything about bichirs.
Yes I think that it's wrong. A full grown senegal will almost put out waste like a severum. Do you stock 15 severums in a 120 ? If yes oh I'm sorry I'm at the wrong place talking with wrong people.
Oh and btw have you observed bichirs in the wild ? Do they live in the wild like you keep them and say you understand everything about bichirs.??

No i dont keep sen but i do keep bigger bichirs, also who said poly makes alot of waste compared to cichlids? And wont you ask a cichlid keeper why they keep alot of fish in a 75g? I understand you point but your comapring a fish that swims alot top to bottom vs fish that dont.

Also. I'm not replying anymore on this thread. This OP just wanted an advice, everyone can give their advice how good or ****ty it may be. It's upto the OP as to which advice he has to follow.
But it seems some members have gone bonkers to prove my suggestion wrong. And prove that they're the real deal. If so good luck with your fishkeeping journey and thanks for your advice, it's of no use to me at least.
Aloha and PEACE ✌

African cichlids need to be kept in large numbers because they live like that in the wild and will kill each other in another setting. It’s not the same thing.

I've had a poly so I know. It may not seem a lot to you but it for me it was comparable to a Oscar waste. BTW good luck with your tanks. ?

You know what the forum is split into people who think what they do is best and people who want to do what's best for their fish. Who ever goes through the whole thread will notice the same. This thread has become a complete waste of a thread . I apologize to the OP, but am firm on the tank dimensions ; 8*3*2 at the bare minimum and 10*4*2 ideal.

Not siding with either puskar or polyaddict, but I do agree that 10-15 polys in a 4 x 2 x 2 is fine. It is true that it may seem like , but in aquarium settings they do like to pile together as a bunch, no matter how much space in the tank there is, As shown in the pic. Besides ornates other bichirs don’t really move much such as senegals imo hence I think there is ample spacing. I understand the point of view of puskar, as the bioload may be high. But with good filtration and water changes it would honestly work out. Comparing cichlids to bichirs isn’t really a fair comparison as their behaviours are unique.

as for staying on topic I agree with puskar 8 x 3 x 2 minimum for silver.I recommend not putting rays And bichirs together, I tried that before and my rays constantly kept getting injured by small nips.

overall all of us have our own opinions, everyone’s standard of keeping fish differs as different people live in different countries

So your saying 15 sen in a 4x2x2 dont fit well when they spend most of the time in the bottom of the tank and swim maybe a couple of minutes every hr? Also they max out 8”-9” rarely get pass 10” and they like to pile together wont work?
A lot of these people humanize fish, like saying keeping a fish in too small of a tank is like a person living in a closet. 15 sens or other smaller polys are fine in a4x2x2

I agree that they weren't 48 inches, but all were above or approx 3ft . A 3ft fish cannot live in a 6ft tank it requires a minimum of 8ft plus all those fish that are rescued are rescued for a reason which is that they were kept in a tank that was not ideal. Now as for the question of the OP.
Can such a stock live in a 300 ?
Yes..
Can they fit for life??
No.
When 8*3 or 10*4 tanks are recommended, that will be the final home for all those guys, and approx 10 yrs of age. If you don't want to keep them for life then you can cram them Into a 125.?
Whose the one who says a 3’ fish can’t live in a 6’ tank? MFK hero’s such as yourself? You think a fish that swims from one side of the tank to the other all day really notices the extra 2’ difference? Why is 8x3 ok? Because at one point someone on this forum said 8x3 should be the minimum?
