Is red maple safe to use as driftwood

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If it is from a hard wood tree such as Oak, Maple for example yes if tree is dead. Also would have someone with experience collecting the branches for you. Dead erect trees are dangerous.

I personally suggest collecting fallen branches from dead trees off the ground. Inspect the wood for wood boring insects. Also make sure no fertilizer or insecticide has not been used in the area.

The tree isn’t dead but has dead branches hung in it from past storms from up to a year ago. I have experience climbing trees, dead and live. I have really good grip on my feet and been climbing since I was a baby. I have a fishing spot at the lake that has a bunch of dead and live trees that I could get good branches from but I don’t tinker the type of tree. Could I just climb the tree in my yard and Carry down a dead branch? I used to do it every month for my papaw for several years so I do know what I’ll be doing.

Well I mean to each their own…I’m no professional stick licker so I def shouldn’t be giving advise

Some good advice from a man in the know regarding stick lickin'. Be careful of getting splinters in your tongue....and watch out for bird ****!

Seriously though Rtc/tsn Rtc/tsn . As others have mentioned, make sure the wood is well dead and dried out (making it sink can bring up some challenges), and whatever you do, DO NOT go climbing trees that you know to be part dead. You do not know how far the dead weakened wood has travelled through the branches, and you will come a crashin' down!

I’ve had my falls many times. I understand it’s a safety thing but I know what I’m doing you’re just gonna have to trust me on it lol. To dry the wood I plan on baking it then boiling then baking then boil them bake for a few days until no more tannins are coming out and it sinks. If I have to then I’ll just move my Anubias into the tiny tank from my 55g
