To be honest I have never paid much attention to anything that Fauci has said, regarding anything.

Okay, let's see what we have...here's a study showing that masks work...here's another...one more...here's a couple of health care workers whose experience says that masks help...and of course, if you think about it for a second, plain common sense tells you the same thing. Nothing newsworthy, nothing to see here...just too much agreement among the bulk of the medical community to create any drama. What to do...what to do...?

Wait a sec...here's a filler piece from the local Buy'n'Sell that proves that masks aren't perfect. What the hell? Everything else in life is perfect; why shouldn't masks be perfect too? Why should I wear a mask if it isn't guaranteed perfect 100% protection? Is this some kind of conspiracy? Maybe I should send out an alert...

"Reductio ad absurdum", perhaps? Nope; the straws being grasped at by many anti-vax, anti- mask, anti-common-sense people are already so absurd as to make that practically impossible...although if you look hard enough, you might find a "study" somewhere to contradict that claim too.

Exactly, goes back to the point I made a few weeks ago about how even if 99% of studies say masks/vaccines work, the 1% that does not is being amplified and pointed to by political groups. Just like climate change!

Hello; A couple of years ago there was a big debate about how to protect public schools. Lots of proposals with folks taking sides. Some among the more sensible and others among the very questionable. One plan that stood out in my mind was from a school principal who had buckets of rocks placed in each classroom. His idea actually stated on media was the students could throw the rocks at an intruder. At first I thought it was a joke or prank but best i could determine he was serious. I will have to admit a bucket of rocks are better than nothing at all.
For some reason I have a similar take on most of the masks I see folks wearing. For sure better than nothing, no argument there. How much better than nothing could be the question. My brother was an underground miner for decades. He had to use equipment such as a respirator mask. There was a standard set by various agencies for the safety equipment used. The safety gear had to have a label printed on it somewhere. My brother wore the masks and other stuff properly as we both knew some old miners with black lung.
I know from being in public that a large percentage of the masks I see are at or near the "box of rocks" level of value. On top of that too many are not being worn properly. Before the covid outbreak I kept three sorts of mask around. Some cheap paper types for when doing work which generated small amounts of dust or such. Some N-95 types for when the dust was to be thicker.
A full on good respirator with a rubber part to fit tight around my mouth and nose and with replaceable cartridges. I used this sort when doing attic insulation or painting or grinding on concrete. Anything with lots of fine dust or aerosol stuff.

My point being the mask mandates seem a make do , "feel better" sort of thing. Near as I can tell a bandana worn cowboy bandit style meets the standard as well as a properly fitted N-95 mask. If some government body wants to make wearing a mask mandatory, then ought there be some guidelines. I have two of the N-95 masks left but they would not pass muster by my own standards in terms of disease control as they have an exhaust valve. Fine for the wearer but my breath has a way out unfiltered.

Then there is the 200 pound gorilla very rarely mentioned. ( 200 pounds and not 800 pounds) That being the aerosol virus is reported to be able to enter the eyes.

Dumb study. They should have looked at data from November 1, 2020 through March 1, 2021. They would have been able to conclude from their 4 month "retrospective study" that mask mandates promote big surges in COVID-19. Instead, they used data during the second surge. Another interesting thing about the first chart below is that on May 14, 2021, CDC said that fully vaccinated people did not need to wear masks indoors. (I believe it was done as an incentive for people to get vaccinated) Many unvaccinated people had never and still don't wear masks. All of a sudden NO ONE was wearing masks. There was not a mask in sight anywhere, except for a few paranoid people like me anticipating the you-know-what to hit the fan. Then delta variant came along. During this unmasked period, we watched in horror at the scenes of stacked bodies and a myriad of pyres burning all night and bodies floating in rivers in India. It didn't take too long for Delta to reach the West. After two months of mask freedom for all, CDC reversed its recommendation and said all people should wear masks indoors in areas of high transmission...it was a very very soft back pedal

CDC admitted that they lied when they said initially that people didn't need masks. It was done out of fear that there would be a run on masks and that health care workers would not have PPE. By May 2021, over 115,000 health care workers world wide had died from COVID-19. On April 3, 2020 CDC recommended that all people wear masks. The head medical honcho even demonstrated how to make a cloth mask. Of course, now "face coverings" has been changed to "a well-fitted KN95 or N95 mask" DUH, who'd have thought it?

How does any of this relate to your decision to not wear a mask now? Of course it needs to be worn properly. Of course some types are better than others. Of course there are no perfect ones.

You don't want to wear a mask. I get it...I don't want to wear one either...nobody wants to wear one. You admit they have some beneficial effect...and yet won't wear one because it's not good enough? Where is the logic in this stance? IMHO the intelligent course is to equip oneself with the best mask that is practical based upon your circumstances and resources, and to wear it correctly.

If my grandchildren's class is invaded by a goblin, what I want...is for the teacher to be a martial arts expert armed with a .44magnum, a broadsword and a killer instinct. I know that won't happen, but if the best defense they have is a bucket of rocks...I want everyone in the class to have a bucket of rocks. I won't be satisfied or happy about it...but I will still take the rocks over some silly "but rocks aren't good enough" nonsense.

Complain? Yes, absolutely...but until something better comes along...grab those rocks!

Bingo!

Hence the "social distancing" portion of the equation. That resolves many potential issues of aerosol contamination. At work, I wear approved safety glasses all day. To add to that we are supplied with face shields, as well as gowns, and gloves, when we are in situations where close contact is a possibility.

None of this is ever going to be perfect, for 100% of the people, 100% of the time, but by taking some simple measures we can ALL help in flattening the curve.
Or we can pout, and do nothing, and blame someone else for the miserable situation we have ALL found ourselves in.
