I did not say it's OK to catch/transport a fish with your bare hands (OP,those 'spikes' on his back are quite sharp i've gotten stabbed a couple of times). I no longer use nets because my fish have gotten tangles/injured before which is why I only use fish bags now.Far better than scaring the living hell out of it after chasing it around the tank.

I didn't think that you said it was ok to catch the fish with barehand. No one is arguing that. I'm only getting at the fact that holding the fish with bare hands for a picture was unnecessary and turns something that is already stressful on the fish too something MUCH more stressful and with higher risks. I agree with some species and larger fish using a net to actually catch the fish out of the tank is not always the way to go.

I'll throw in my 2 cents on this...although it sounds like it won't be popular.

Nets work in many or most situations. There are also times and places where corralling a fish with bare hands is preferable, and done carefully I don't think it is any more of a stressor than the use of a net.

Having someone else snap a quick pic of the fish adds perhaps a second to its transfer time. Fish often get tangled in nets for longer than that, and are probably more likely to be damaged in the process. Most cats are better moved by hand.

I would never monkey with a camera or phone in one hand while holding a fish in the other.
