Cornish Jack
Mormyrops anguilloides

Size: 4’
pH: 6.0-7.0
Tank size: 500G/Individual
Country of origin: Countries throughout Sub-Saharan Africa
Diet: Most dry, frozen, and live foods of an appropriate size
Temperament: Extremely predatory and aggressive
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Mormyrops anguilloides is the largest mormyrid in the world. These fish possess very weak electricity, similar to other mormyrids, as well as knifefish. Although there are indeed animals large enough to prey on them within their natural habitat, Cornish jacks often serve as apex predators, at least in terms of fish. Believed to have been named by European settlers who thought that they looked similar to Esox lucius, which are commonly known as pikes, though some people in England refer to them as “jacks.”

Barred Hill Trout
Opsarius barna

Size: 8”
pH: 6.5-7.5
Tank size: 75G/1 small group
Country of origin: India, Myanmar, Nepal, Bangladesh
Diet: Enjoys to graze on algae and biofilm, though most dry, frozen, and live foods of a appropriate size will likely work
Temperament: Peaceful, may potentially eat tiny tankmates
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Despite its name, Opsarius barna is not a trout at all, but rather a form of cyprinid, closer to carp, minnows, and barbs. These fish are similar in many ways to true minnows and barbs. Despite their peaceful nature, it can be assumed that due to their size, these fish may consume exceptionally small tankmates if improperly fed.

Avocado Pufferfish
Auriglobus modestus

Size: 4.5”
pH: 6.0-8.0
Tank size: 50G/1 small group
Country of origin: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand
Diet: Live and frozen foods. It is imperative that you provide some sort of hard food
Temperament: Nippy, though can be kept with certain fast-moving fish
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Auriglobus modestus is a small Asian pufferfish that prefers to swim in groups. These fish require heavy filter flow in order to both preserve water quality and emulate the rivers in which they are found in the wild. Lots of decorations are advised in order to break their line of sight and help establish territory.

Temperament: Peaceful, may be bullied by larger fish
Temperature: 75-80° F
sg: 1.000-1.015

Borneo Redline Halfbeak
Hemirhamphodon tengah

Size: 2.5"
pH: 4.0-6.0
Tank size: 10G/1 small group
Country of origin: Indonesia, particularly Borneo
Diet: Live and frozen foods-- Some small, dry foods may also work
Temperament: Peaceful, nervous
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Hemirhamphodon tengah is a skittish surface-dweller best kept in groups. These delicate nano fish require water that is soft, both in terms of pH and flow. They are more sensitive to water parameters than some other fish. Due to the long beak possessed by these fish, it is imperative to try and prevent these fish from ramming into the walls of the tank and breaking it. Other than that, these fish are relatively easy once you have a nice, established tank with consistent water parameters, and smaller, peaceful tankmates. Not recommended with fish such as puffers, as they are very thin, and could easily be broken in half. These fish are livebearers. Unlike many halfbeaks, these fish do not enter brackish.
