If yes, what is your nitrate?

If I did not test my water...
  1. ...I recognize that I will likely be asked to do a test, and that water tests are critical for solving freshwater health problems.

My Jewel Cichlid has had an ulcer for a few weeks now. I have tried Melafix but it doesn't seem to have helped much. The ulcer seems to have come from a fight but it has never fully healed. How can I treat it since my Jewel cichlid is getting more and more unhealthy.
Edit: water pH is about a 7.6-7.8
Also should I put him in my 10 gal quarantine tank?

Yeah, melafix is incredibly weak. A picture would help. It's better to treat in a quarantine tank/plastic tub.

Seachem Kanaplex and salt would be the first thing I would do in a QT since it hasn't shown signs of healing on its own for a few weeks. About 1 tablespoon of dissolved salt per 5 gallons.

Can I just use salt or do I have to use Kanaplex? I do not have Kanaplex as of right now? Can I get it from Petco?

Petco no longer carries antibiotic medications. If that's a bacterial infection (since the jewel is going down hill), then only an antibiotic will work. Salt can slow down an infection but in most cases it will not cure an internal one.

I was wondering, can I cure the ulcer by dipping a cotton swab into a high concentration salt solution, and then dabbing the ulcer with the salt?
I was wondering this because I think that the salt can kill off the bacteria in the ulcer by making them shrivel and die.

It turns out that I was overreacting in my original post. My jewel cichlid seems to be fine, but his ulcer still lingers on. I also noticed that his poop is white - parasites?

How can I treat both bacteria and parasites?

I was thinking about doing a salt treatment
