Mueller’s White Knifefish
Orthosternarchus tamandua

Size: 2’
pH: 6.0.-7.0
Tank size: 220G/Individual
Country of origin: Brazil, Peru [Full range info insufficient]
Diet: Live foods
Temperament: Peaceful, though shy and delicate. Possibly predatory
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Seems like we’re on sort of a South American kick, huh? This’ll be the last one for a little bit… I promise. Anyway, Orthosternarchus tamandua is a bizarre, deep-water knifefish found mostly in dark environments from around 20-30’ deep. These fish are delicate, open water swimmers, and therefore need a considerably large aquarium. Despite not hailing from caves, they have evolved a cave-like appearance over time, due to their habitat.

When it’s time to do South Americans again, I recommend Cichla and Crenicichla. There are numerous species available

NO COMMON NAME
Paralaubuca harmandi

Size: 6”
pH: 7.0.-7.5
Tank size: 75G/1 small group
Country of origin: Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam
Diet: Most live, frozen, and prepared foods of an appropriate size will suffice
Temperament: Peaceful for the most part, but may outcompete some smaller fish. Best kept with larger tankmates.
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Paralaubuca harmandi is a rather unique fish in the aquarium trade. Why? Because almost nobody outside of their natural range keeps, utilizes, or even knows about them. They don’t even have a common name. Now, to be fair, I have improvised some names for other fish that lack common names, though, for this one, I came up empty-handed. Though very little is known about their care, I can tell you that they are a fairly large, robust, and sturdy cyprinid that likely makes an excellent dither.
