American Paddlefish
Polyodon spathula

Size: 4.5’
pH: 7.5-8.5
Tank size: 10000G/1 small group
Country of origin: United States
Diet: Small live foods, can be trained onto pellet and powder foods
Temperament: Graceful filter feeder-- Possible threat to especially small fish
Temperature: 55-75° F

Description

Polyodon spathula is one of North America’s largest freshwater fish, and it is a relatively peaceful filter feeder, comparable to basking sharks. These fish are incredibly ancient, with a family dating back over one hundred million years. This fish is one of only two possibly extant members of its family, and the other member is largely believed to be extinct. This is truly a fascinating species that is unlike almost any other. They are closest biologically to sturgeons.

Saw one at petzone. It was not massive, just around 10”. They had it in a show tank.

Are these really that rare? My LFS gets them in pretty often, and they're not that pricey ($35 each). Odd. I think I remember that almost all of them in the store were fed frozen bloodworms and chopped earthworms.

Not sure if we are referring to the same sp, correct me if I am wrong. It could be some other species with that name attached. That being said I'd have to see to be sure

Wow it took me almost 2 days to get caught up on this.

xenacanth9 xenacanth9 great job at working on this. There are a few details here and there that may be generalizations etc. I think I read somewhere that you said you had to “improvise”. But other than that, great job. I have learned about a bunch of new fish and was able to see a bunch of all time faves on this list.

I was happy to see such diversity on the list. Keep it coming if you are able to… no pressure lol
