Hi All,

I've been lurking this forum for like 15 years lol. Long time discus and african cichlid keeper over that same period, but I've always had only a 75g or 90g tank (for space reasons), so I've never felt like I've had much to add of value with so many monster tanks on here. Anyways, here to share about a new SRD Flowerhorn I picked up.

Apologies for the long post, but it's my first post and time owning a Flowerhorn, so exciting times lol. Main reason I was interested in doing so is that although I love Discus, which is mostly what I've had overall and most recently, they don't tend to have a ton of personality. The new flowerhorn already shows way more than they ever did, no matter how majestic they were. They were more like calming art, while the Flowerhorn is more like a unique pet. It's been awesome.

It's only been a bit over a week. He still isn't back to his very original color, but he's looking good and has improved since the first few days. It's a 90g tank, sand bottom with minimal rocks and anubias leftover from the planted tank. I've attached/wedged the anubias to and between the rock carefully to essentially cover the edges of the rock and prevent any injuries. He's been loving the "cove" so far, and sleeps in the area directly behind it every night. Will keep an eye.. he hasn't been skittish whatsoever, but if I start to see any odd behavior I'll just remove them entirely. Main filters are an Eheim Pro 4+ and Fluval FX6. I also have an AC100 that I use from time to time as a polishing filter with most micron cloth.

Feeding twice a day, a bit modestly right now. Will increase and dial in a bit as he settles in. He's taken to just about all foods, feeding:
NLS color enhancing tropical or cichlid- 50%
NLS AlgaeMax and Fluval Bug Bites - 25%
Frozen Krill & Spirulina Brine Shrimp/Freeze Dried Mealworms, Shrimp and Crickets (cut up) - 25%

Welcome any feedback on the diet. Not overthinking it, same goal of high quality variety as with my discus, with just a bit less protein. Without being able to have bottom dwellers as tankmates due to aggression, I'd prefer to use floating pellets to prevent waste, but I don't see too many high quality foods that are. Am I missing any? Even with very small feedings, some goes to waste on the bottom, which adds up over time. He does sift through the sand which is cool to watch, but some still just goes to waste. 60-50% water changing/gravel vacc'ing 1-2x week.

Some pics attached (not the best quality, apologies in advance). One additional question. You can see in some pics that in the very middle of his band/black line it looks a bit less clear/more cloudy than the rest of the band? Up close it doesn't look like fungus or anything concerning, maybe just genetics? This was also the case when I got him. Any thoughts here appreciated.

Thanks in advance again for any insight or feedback!

Yea the pics are so much better on my phone and the tank in real life. Crystal clear, shimmering water and the fish looks so much better. I've always been bad at that, should probably invest in a standalone camera and take a photography class lol

Welcome aboard
Personally never kept a Flowerhorn but read here that the Flowerhorn makes a great interactive wet pet. The foods you are feeding are fine imo. Nice of you to join after lurking for so long ?

Thank you! I really appreciate the welcome. And yea, definitely very interactive. I can tell he's still not fully acclimated to me, but he does interact the minute I'm up or around (I know it's because of food but still lol). And he shows a lot of personality even just roaming around the tank.

And thanks on the confirmation on the food, just was wondering if anyone is aware of similar high quality foods that don't sink. Hikari Gold has some, but it has a lot of fillers in it. But I won't worry too much about it and keep looking around. :)

Hikari cichlid bio gold + mini floaters are a good choice for flowerhorn.
Nice fish!

Thanks for the recs! And thank you!!

Nice looking fish!!

Thank you!

Amazon.com : Hikari Blood Red Parrot+ Fish Food, Mini Pellets, 11.7 oz. (333g) : Pet Supplies

idk why this food isn't more well-known in the FH community. Feed him this to really bring out his red. Supplement with Hikari Cichlid Gold or Biogold+ to bring out his other colors via the spirulina in those (BRP+ doesn't have spirulina).

I actually did pick some of this up a few weeks back. But I didn't realize it had so many fillers in the first few ingredients. I may still work it into the rotation for variety + the color as you mentioned. But I did also just find NLS floating pellets on Amazon, had no clue that they made them. I do think that I'll switch to all floating over as many foods as I can.

Also, following up on the question I had regarding the middle of his band. I'm seeing that this is pretty normal in other youtube videos and pics. So I'm pretty sure it's a non-issue. Also he's colored up a bit more in the face. The tank unfortunately is partly in the path of sunlight and he's been following his shadow and lightly attacking it non-stop in the afternoon these few days, so maybe the aggression is doing it lol. I now feel even better about my decision to keep him alone (I was on the fence of trying until reading so many cases where it didn't work out), he seems pretty aggressive lol

yup, I don't recommend the Hikari BRP+ as a staple, but I definitely recommend it as a few-times-a-week supplement. I personally don't know of any food out there that has as many ingredients to bring out the red coloration as that one. I feed my flowerhorn Hikari CG and CBG+ as staple.

I must stress... DO NOT feed any live foods or freeze-dried or frozen foods. More and more, flowerhorn hobbyists are realizing that the parasite-risk and shortened lifespans (from either too much protein or fat or intestinal blockage) are not worth it. Flowerhorn are man-made hybrid fish with genetically weaker digestive systems than pure-bred cichlids. Stick with prepared pellets. Also don't feed anything over 50% protein content or 10% fat content (e.g. Okiko, etc). Those are over-kill foods that make false promises on a bigger kok (if you're feeding them regularly, the only things that will make a bigger kok is GENETICS and clean water) and anecdotally shorten lifespan because of too high protein/fat (like us eating big macs all the time).
