It’s finally happening, but it’s actually happening

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i cant speak for channel but i know for sure that an adult bullhead will leave everything above 12cm alone. They are always hungry but wont even try a fast fish like a cichlid and def prefer pea's or shrimp over a live fish. as said before they really scavenge and dont really hunt. Mine was a friendly giant atleast. I even was able to keep 8cm small bichirs with him while he was around 30cm
I think I’m set on the channel, but bullheads are certainly a cool species!

This reminds me - there is a certain place in Lake Poway where there is an albino catfish. You can see him periodically throughout the day in this one area. He’s around 15”, and the ranger said that this is one of the only one that he see’s often. Really interesting animal from above.

Channels come in albino - probably going to max out smaller than a common.

I feel like the channel will just keep growing until it dies, wednesday13 wednesday13 says in 5 years it might be 18”, and in 15, 30”. But that sounds like a beast!

Does anyone know a good filter brand?

24”-30” fish are pretty managable size IMO lol… ??‍♂️?. The tables turn a bit for anything truly over 36”…the koi get just as big in time also. Honestly their growth rates should b around the same. U can get butterfly koi, theyll stay smaller/grow slower.

I love the colors of Tancho Sanke’s. Yeah, koi do get very large! I started digging today. Starting from the middle and working my way out.

I’ve encountered a couple problems as expected.

When my parents bought the house 17 years ago, it came with a raised area which you can see on the picture I posted. It is held together by cinderblocks. Under, and beside the cinder blocks is small, sharp pieces of granite. Unfortunately, the guy who put that stuff there put an absurd amount of rock, and I’ve already shoveled away atleast 3 wheel barrows worth. And that’s just a 5’ area!

2 fence post is rotting, and infested with termites, so I had to dig a hole and remove the cemented post, and put a new one in. I’m doing the other one tomorrow.

Roots from the Bogonvilla and Ornamental Pear are terrorizing me right now, as they are so thick and hard to break. Most of them are 2” thick, so it is very hard to break them.

The Masked Shadow The Masked Shadow i’m not looking forward to digging my pond either. My soil is about 1/1.5 feet topsoil, and then the rest is clay, and I plant to make my pond about 2feet deep with a foot above the ground.

We need some pics of the progress!!! :worthlesswithoutpic:

I say go with the channel and the koi, but add a ton of zebra danios. Pond raised zebra danios are some of the nicest looking fish I’ve seen.
Are you just making a rectangular pond or is it a more natural looking one?

My one bit of advice: Do NOT add duckweed.
