I would not mix black and white sand. It looks like salt and pepper.
Better mix sand colours with less contrast for a natural look.

I hear what you are saying. I also have very little variety of sand colors to choose from unless I'm buying actual aquarium sand. I only do that when I'm going for a vary specific look. I do like the look of black and white sand mixed, it would not be the first time I've used it. Supernaturals brand actually has an African cichlid mix that is black and white.

Just to expand on my sand color mixing response, I don't use actual aquarium sand or PFS but use a product made by Estes' called PermaColor Quartz in the Trowel-Rite size which is 20-40 mesh and considered an architectural floor coating. I bought a lot of it from a local distributor in Ohio but it may be available in Michigan if you can find it.

I actually mixed Black, White and Chocolate together though White is the majority of the color. It took a bit of experimentation to get the colors looking natural and I use it in all my tanks.

I agree that the typical black and white sand mix does look like salt and pepper and very unnatural to my eyes.

So that was this morning. I feel the shells are too "purposely" placed to look natural. The Shellies that I have that were going in here are too large to go in escargot shells, so these are what they are in in the other tank these work. Yes I said were. I don't want them in here now I guess having them for two+ years and raising 5+ batches have worn me out on them. Looking for something else. I know what I want I was hoping to bring some home today but alas they didn't bring any..... august probably. That's ok because I've done another thing too. Pics later.

I think the substrate looks better mixed with the bit of black.

I'm not a fan of those particular shells as they just look foreign or out of place in a fresh water tank. I still have a small box of them on the shelf since I hate the way they look. I bought them with the intention of using them for either Calvus or Comps and even they didn't like them.

Both Shellies I have like them.
Melli like them because the males fit. Males being 3-4" I've had a couple get stuck in smaller shells lost 1 found it dead in the shell. I found two more struggling to get out so I broke the shell around them to get them out.
My ornatapinnis like them. I have 4 no idea what the mix was or really is but they were starting to bicker in the growout so I threw 4 or 5 shells in with them too. I went to move the ornatapinnis to this tank today and guess what......babies....lol. So they'll stay there for a bit.

I have escargot shells and Chinese mystery snail shells for my multies. The males don't go in the shells just the females. Not sure how I missed this thread. Super cool seeing another monster shelly tank.
