I hear what you are saying. I also have very little variety of sand colors to choose from unless I'm buying actual aquarium sand. I only do that when I'm going for a vary specific look. I do like the look of black and white sand mixed, it would not be the first time I've used it. Supernaturals brand actually has an African cichlid mix that is black and white.I would not mix black and white sand. It looks like salt and pepper.
Better mix sand colours with less contrast for a natural look.

Oh great now you tell me!Just to expand on my sand color mixing response, I don't use actual aquarium sand or PFS but use a product made by Estes' called PermaColor Quartz in the Trowel-Rite size which is 20-40 mesh and considered an architectural floor coating. I bought a lot of it from a local distributor in Ohio but it may be available in Michigan if you can find it.
I actually mixed Black, White and Chocolate together though White is the majority of the color. It took a bit of experimentation to get the colors looking natural and I use it in all my tanks.
I agree that the typical black and white sand mix does look like salt and pepper and very unnatural to my eyes.

Both Shellies I have like them.I think the substrate looks better mixed with the bit of black.
I'm not a fan of those particular shells as they just look foreign or out of place in a fresh water tank. I still have a small box of them on the shelf since I hate the way they look. I bought them with the intention of using them for either Calvus or Comps and even they didn't like them.
