Your FAVORITE aquarium fish and why

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I’m still very much new to keeping fish, only about a year and a half now. I’ve been seriously enjoying my convict but to be fair the list of fish I’ve kept is very small. I don’t really think I can fairly pick a definite favorite at this point in time.

One fish comes to mind as a possible favorite. It’s not one that I’ve kept, but one my father actually had. Years ago, before I even thought of getting my own tanks, my father had a Melanurus wrasse in his reef tank. I thought it was the coolest fish in the world. I loved the beautiful colors, the bold personality. It became the family favorite fish for the several years my father had it. It was also really cool to see it bury into the sand to sleep when the lights went out, just kind of a unique behavior.

Here's my list divided into sub categories:
Color: Salvini + Red Jewel cichlids + African Rift Lake cichlids
Body shape: Malawi eye biter, red tail sharks
Personality: Blood parrots
Compatability/aggression: Yellow Lab, Firemouth, African peacock cichlids
Ease of keeping: all cichlids (except for angelfish, discus, Petco German Blue Rams), plecos, serpae tetras (they just don't die once you put them in a school)
Breeding: swordtails
Overall favorite: Well uh, look at my username.

My favorite fish ever are Pearsei. While everyone seems to go with the big, predatory, aggressive fish as their choice, mine is a big vegetarian. Ive owned many over the years and they have all been great community fish with very outgoing personalities.

This one was my favorite, her name was Porkchop. She was about 10 years old when she passed. A massive fish at 16”. Still miss her, but have a new one in my 300 that is the new Porkchop.

My top 3 of all:
Honduran red points
Aphyosemion maculatum
Luxilus cerasinus

I have favorites for everything though. Usually in lists of up to 3's, but some favorites when there aren't enough to make a list.

Favorite bettas: channoides, siamorientalis and muara wahau unimaculata

Cichla: thyrorus, mirianae, piquiti

And so on

Polypterus endlicheri, even though mine did a suicide mission three days into having him. Ate like a crocodile ripping off bits of prawns. I’ll set up a dedicated tank for multiples one day but at $500 a pop where I live I have other projects to do first! It found its way out of the only hole in the aquarium lid. Still heartbroken lol.

I love red tailed giant gouramis but I can’t get one in Australia at the moment but I think when I finally do it could quickly get top spot. Look like amazing wet pets.

Australian natives are my passion at the moment, there’s a bunch high up but i could rattle on far to long about them.

My favorite broad group of fish is knifefish. There just so different than most fish, and they look so cool.
My favorite species is red tail catfish. They have such a personality. Also as baby's if you feed them blood worms it's SO adorable.
Right now I have a 3.5 inch african black knifefish and a 2 inch red tail catfish.20230209_180123.jpg

My senegal did the same thing, just a few days after getting him. I'm still heartbroken too, but some day I'll get another senegal. I hope you get an enlicheri one day too :)
