Koi churn up the substrate like crazy and also crap like crazy, and with that many behemoths in a small tank, that sand will make the water column very cloudy.
Also as Krich stated, Price is no guarantee on a filter's capabilities. I have two large canister filters in with my turtles, and they do giant turds and then they'll mix them with the substrate, making it very cloudy, especially straight after a water change. I remove all this excess sediment by making a little device. It is a pump with a plastic bottle attached stuffed with filter floss. I simply cut the bottom off of the plastic bottle (about your standard drinking plastic water bottle), attach the bottle by the neck to the pump's head, then leave it in the tank for the day.

What mediums do you have in the filter ?I have the FX6 too and am really not a fan of it. A friend of mine who runs a few different on the same tank even calls it the worst.
With that many fish you should ad at least another one. Either a second external, a seperate mechanical or you ad another stage to it.
fx6s are largely a gimmick in my opinion. unless your utilizing the mechanical media chambers your only going to fit at beast 1 gallon of media. thats really not sufficient for what the filter claims it can do. but on the plus side. the pumps powerful and it can move alot of water. when i had my fish room i had several fx5s that would feed overhead sumps. worked just fine. i would load the fx5 with nothing but polyfil and then load the overhead sump with pot scrubbies.

getting a fish to stop eating live is going to be up to the individual fish. it could work. it might not.
having larger water volume will always help. but at the end of the day. the fx5 and 6 really doesn't hold a whole lot of media when its setup to do both mechanical and biological filtration. i wouldnt expect it to filter more then a 120 with moderate stocking.
If you are able, post another pic of your tank after your plug in the FX6 and it's been running at least an hour.
