“Large” fish, planted tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As far a the plants so, the Vallisneria is a good choice, because it can handle cooler temps and high flow.
Some of mine.

Because my interest is in Rheophillic species, (those from fast flowing streams and rivers), I always try to create, a linear flow environment with strong flow across the length of my tanks, just like the areas where I collect these type fish.

Many aquarists underestimate and/or sometimes overestimate the type flows there fish, and plants have evolved to do best in, you can hear in the video above just how strong some flows can be.
In the Panamanian river above there were lots tetras, gobies, cichlids, and a plethora of Plecos, all easily handling and evolved to live in the flow.

I’m not sure if it will work with the Congo tetras but a salvini would look good in that scape and they are usually okay with plants too.
I like the look of Salvinis, but the little information I can find on them says they destroy plants and can be very aggressive?

I find salvini are aggressive with other cichlids, but not so much with non-cichlids, (as long as they can't eat them).
Being from Central Mexico, they are tolerant of coolish temps (low 70s) and are adapted to live in rivers, sometimes, with strong flow, especially in the rainy season.

I had mine in a tank planted with java fern and Anubis and they never damaged any of them.
As for aggression they were extremely aggressive with every other cichlid but never hassled any of the tetras. I think the barbs would be big enough fast enough to avoid any trouble but the only way to really know is to try it and then if it all goes crazy you have to resolve it one way or another
Salvini are a really cool fish, I rehomed mine as they were too full on but now I know a bit more about cichlids I wil definitely keep them again but do it properly this time.
I actually discovered this forum when I was googling “how to reduce salvini aggression “

Just discovered how much Denison barbs are going to cost me 🥲 recently moved to Australia and the prices are very different here….I'd better off going for Discus.

Let’s scrap all the stocking and see what other suggestions I have for this tank. I like the idea of Oscar’s. I know they have a horrendous reputation for destroying plants, but based on the plan I have, do people think it could work? I came across a couple videos showing them in planted tanks…

I mean Oscar’s could go with plants they don’t really eat them but you have to glue them into a
piece of hardwood or something as it might uproot I have an Oscar who had a fake one plant and he got Mad at it and attacked it every night lol

Not a cichlid, but I think a flagtail Prochilodus will fit the bill. Colorful, peaceful, won’t eat the plants (experiences may vary), will forage constantly helping with maintenance, is adaptable to various water conditions (in nature, they are seasonal migratory), and they are full of personality. True, some people don’t like them. Mine (9-10”) eats from my hand.

If you can find them, snakeskin gourami would fit the bill. One would fill up the tank space and not harm your plants.
They get a lot more colorful than the one in that video too:

My Severum's destroyed any plants.

They enjoyed the $20 salads I would occasionally put in the tank :wall:

Tank is much too small for Oscars if it's only 106 gallons IMO.
