New Tank & Baby Green Terror!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
With everyone’s recommendations, I replaced the heater with a Fluval. Man does that thing look slick!! So much nicer looking and more accurate! I also put the sponge filter back in, I swear it helps keep the water clearer. I think it finally looks “finished.” Now for a larger size with this same setup in about 6 months! This is addicting!!!IMG_6495.jpeg

Trying to darken things up, clean things up, and go as natural as possible. I really love the natural look, color, and size of the PFS, so I completely changed the décor using a lot more rocks from my backyard! Also got rid of sponge filter as I am already immensely over-filtered. I'll add an airstone for when we go out of town though to be safe. Ordered a black Fluval heater as well which should look better!

Great looking tank but remember those rocks displace a LOT of volume and you're losing gallons that way. Between the subsrate and rocks your 29? gallon may really be only 20...just sayin'. So as your fish grow those water changes will be critical.

That much large rock might be a bit heavy looking for that size tank. The artist in me is hard to contain, lol.

Might want to add some plants. Ive had luck with moss attached to rocks or pothos growing out of the tank. The roots in the tank create cover and really help with water quality.

Thanks for the feedback! I keep a close eye on water parameters with API master test kit. I do a weekly water change of 50% and let it go 3 weeks once just to test out of curiosity. After 3 weeks, ammonia was 0, nitrite was 0, and nitrate was 5 PPM….so it stays pretty stable! Aquaclear 110 with large sponge on bottom, finer sponge on top, and a huge bag of bio-media on top of that plus the large sponge filter and it’s just the two fish. They’re fed twice daily with a few days break here and there if we go on a short vacation. I’ll make sure to keep checking with less water though now having more decor volume. They’ll get a larger tank soon enough too!!

When you say heavy looking, do I need to be worried about weight lol? Or are you meaning just your personal opinion on aesthetics?

Oh, just that it seems to be a bit too much rock for that size tank, looking 'bottom heavy'. The highlight rocks would come out. Then you could lean the branch over to the big stone making an arch with the other end against the back glass. You have a nice pass through under the big rock...a branch arch would make another nice pass through. Fish just looove nooks and crannies.
