Gutsy Mix, Can it be Done? 2.0

The sources I've used are reputable, and most of them don't sell stuff, they are written for the sake of knowledge, not for sales, and those I listen to the most. Yeah, being adorable and reasonably priced are bad excuses.

I haven't refused to listen to you, I'm seriously considering getting rid of it. The "not discouraging" ship has sailed, though...

I think this is practically hopeless at this point. I want way more than I 1. can afford and 2. I have the space for. I just wish I didn't have rare/cool taste, as that drives me with this hobby and many other hobbies. I want the rarest/coolest fish I can get, but then again, 90% of those fish are 10 times the size of my tank. The worst part is, that I know and can help other people decide on what fish to get, but I can't decide or know what I want or what is appropriate for my tank.

Like I said before, I will sleep on it, think about it further, and decide tomorrow. I'm going to the fish store tomorrow again anyway.
And since you’re new, fish don’t have to be rare, I’d think you’d find growing a pair of convicts to maturity and watching them spawn and breed would be incredibly interesting and only cost around $10 and could live in there for life. You could do things like make a badass scape and play with lighting to get shimmer effects etc…
I think you’re focusing too much on what’s considered rare and cool

I agree
If rarity is about showing off, most other people find the cheap fish and inverts we take for granted to be the most interesting or pretty ones in the tank.

Exactly, when I had my 10 tank fishroom going, I had many rare and hard to find fish, but the ones that my guests jaws were always dropping about were the 75 community tank and the African cichlid tank. They didn’t really care about my 24” jardini or my bowfin or any of my wolf fish or my red tail barracuda or my odoe pike etc…

Every time someone sees my reef, they pay attention only to the clowns and gsp. Makes me wonder why sps even exist.

Haha, same with my reef. It’s the GSP and duncans and it’s my common clown people like, not the misbar Darwin lol

I don't care about showing off; it is more for myself than others. Other than my immediate family, I don't have many other people to show it off to, even if I wanted to. My friends might think it's cool, but most don't care and know about fish or fishkeeping like I do. They are pretty typical as they prefer video games and social media; I'm one of the few who is a stranger to both.

Also, I will rehome the Oscar tomorrow and replace it with an Arowana (kidding). All jokes aside, I will rehome the Oscar tomorrow and replace it with an appropriate fish.

What are some glass-banging fish that are ideally sized for my tank? I want something personable, something colorful. I don't want livebearers or small schooling fish; to me, they aren't personable and more decor-like than "pets."

What are y'all's thoughts on Amazon Puffers? They stay small and can be kept permanently in freshwater correct? And aren't super aggressive?

At the end of the day most things in hobbies are made overly complicated by the hobbyists because that’s what they enjoy while the average person looking in what appreciate it like they do and will see surface level beauty. If I get a watch then it’ll be one that does the job and looks decent, if I ask a watch enthusiast what watch they love the most and why you’ll get a very complicated answer.

I think that’s a much better idea, I’ve never kept Amazons , but I’ve had many other puffers and they’re extremely personable, I believe Amazons are freshwater and a shoaling species

Amazon puffers are perhaps the least aggressive puffer out there, but they are a difficult fish to keep.
They require multiple feedings per day to keep well fed, and will only take frozen and live foods. They are a schooling fish so need at least 3 (bare minimum), but 5+ is ideal. I also believe they need high flow to be comfortable
The beak on them grows very fast and may require manual trimming:

They are doable, but a very large commitment. One of my favorite fish I’ve kept.

If you want a puffer of any type, one of the lurkers like pao genus or t. Murius would be a better first puffer for ease of care. Schoutodini also work, but at $150 a fish, a shoal gets pricey.

Yeah Puffer long term wouldn't work for me...
