Hornet cichlid for 1700 gallon pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It could be ok as with that amount of space there should be plenty of room to reduce territorial aggression but keep in mind each individual can behave differently. Usually extremely belligerent you may find that even if it works the tankmates are never fin perfect. Personally I haven't tried one in such a large volume nearest was years ago in a 10x3x3 when a supplier gifted me an extremely large pair (it did not work). This is far smaller than what you have so give it a go.

Many years ago I had a 360-gallon community tank full of the sort of big-ass bad-attitude actors that seem to be so popular with younger aquarists like I was then. The tank was big enough that many supposedly aggressive fish were pretty mellow and well-behaved. Red Devil, Managuense, large Distichodus lussosso, large Labeo cyclorhynchus, large -ijko,l.
large Clarias...they all got long with minimal aggression and no damage.

And then came my T.buttikoferi. At 8-9 inches it was one of the smaller fish in the tank. It lasted less than one day; the damage it did to much larger fish was unbelievable. The survivors weren't missing chunks of fin; they were missing chunks of fish.

Maybe the pond will be big enough for this to work. Unfortunately, when a nasty cichlid "snaps", it might take a day, a week, a month, a year...and then when it happens the destruction can be complete within a few hours, so if you happen to be elsewhere...:WHOA:

i see. the pacu will be much larger in height and even maybe in lenght and might be able to scare the buttekoferi. The RTC will be massive for it to bother. But I think that I won't be able to add peacock bass or red devil's to the pond, if I add the buttikoferi cichlid. Am I correct

Even in that size tank, I would not recommend putting a hornet cichlid in there. I think if you like that cichlid, you should make a tank just for it, nothing else, not even an armored catfish.
the problem is the pond is so big and it looks empty so i wanna stock it with some cool fish like hornet cichlid
