Hi everyone,

My salvini cichlid and my blood parrot cichlid in my 29 gallon grow-out tank have been lethargic today ever since I introduced 3 new serape tetras to the tank. When I went to feed them they didn't go after the food. I'm confused about what's going on because the other tank mates being 5 other serape tetras and a rainbow shark all appear fine but these 2 cichlids are lethargic. The serape tetras have been quarantined for 2 weeks now and the lethargy happened in less than a few hours so I doubt its transmitted by the serape tetras which is partly why I'm confused.

My current thoughts about causes:
1) the new serape tetras introduced some disease
2) some unknown disease specific to the cichlids is affecting them
3) they are skittish after being introduced to the new fish

Any thoughts?

I think it would have affected the other Serpae Tetra also. Maybe give a day or so and see if the behavior changes.
Did you pour any of the water from the bag into your aquarium?
I did not pour any of the water from my bag into the aquarium.

Update: today the parrot cichlid is fine but the salvini cichlid is still lethargic. I'm not sure if he's just hiding or sick?

Here is a closer pic of the salvini in question:

The lips seem a bit weird, I'm not sure if it's columnaris or if the white on the lips is a fungal infection.

Any thoughts?

Doesn’t look like columnaris. Could be early. Doesn’t look like fungus. If it’s columnaris then furan 2 and kanamycin. Keep temps in the low 70s.

Could it just be ammonia poisoning? Before we did our water change the ammonia level was at .25 ppm. However, I'd expect the smaller tetras to succumb to ammonia poisoning before the cichlid? What are your thoughts?

I’d expect the other fish to get affected as well. Any ammonia above 0 with sick fish is a problem. Easily could be from ammonia.
