Feeding Fire Eels

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don’t access to “night crawlers” I can only get tiny little compost worms. The eels will eat shrimp soaked in garlic extract and vitachem that I soak the blood worms in. They won’t touch pellets at all. My issue is that they are messy eaters and even with spot feeding I end up over feeding my clown loaches and other tank mates. My eels are only 10-12 inches so I have plenty of time to work out a solution.

Is all frozen seafood high in thiaminase?

Is all frozen seafood high in thiaminase?

I’m hoping to answer this for myself soon. I’ve recently acquired all the bits and bobs to do a basic thiamine colourmetic test. It’s pretty basic as I don’t have a spectrophotometer to hand but I’m planning to make a standard chart using pre- measured thiamine concentrations and do a rough estimate from that. So far I’ve only been able to determine that I can definitely test for the presence of thiamine itself. Next phase is to grind up some prawn, squid, herring etc and repeat the experiment. If over 24 hours the intensity of the colour is notably less than the control with no seafood added in taking that as a positive for the presence of thiaminase. Should at least be able to answer what foods contain substantial amounts of thiaminase.
