H. Carpintis “Escondido”

Well, upon my return from a week in Australia, I discovered 1 of my beautiful Escondido in an unsalvageable condition. He (vented confirmed male) was completely descaled, fins tattered badly, and resting upside down on the bottom. He had to be euthanized.
I need to decide now if I want to dedicate the 125 to the remaining carpintis & the loach group, or sell him, (also confirmed male by venting, despite radical body shape differences with the other) and seek out a pair, or grow out a new group for a pair.

I'm also sorry for your loss. I always liked the carpintis. Never had the Escondido unfortunately.
Maybe we cichlidophiles make too much of location variants, maybe not.
I have been finding, those cichlids from wide, open rivers, are quite different than narrow tree lined, folliage covered streams.
The Darienheros species living in the wide and open Mamoni are much more pale and golden....
those caught in narrow shaded, and tree and foliage covered streams (below).

And its not only the cichlids that exhibit this variation.
Above a predatory Gobiomorus from the Mamoni.
Below a freshly cought Gobiomorus from the tree lined Uni
Whether these color vaiants will remain permanent when pllaced in a tank, may change (although not so far for the Darenheros).
Diet from one river to the next may also be a factor.

Very interesting and informative as always! I'm curious to see if the colour stays in the aquarium. I hope to someday collect my own cichlids. Someday.....
