    Glass

Walnut Creek Glass can get you a variety of thicknesses, and will custom cut it for you. They also can get starphire glass if you want it. http://www.walnutcreekglass.com I recently had them quote a tank for me, 80" x 24" x 30". Here are their numbers: $1,271.50 3/4" Clear...

    300g Saltwater Custom Stand Build

Last weekend was productive, and the stand has now progressed out of the shop and temporarily into the house. I knew that the area the tank will live in is very, very near level, but not quite; so I wanted to do the final fit-up of the stand, before fastening all the interior plywood, with the...

    300g Saltwater Custom Stand Build

Wellll...the irony is that I got a good deal on a used acrylic 300, but it has a ton of crazing. So we'll see. I have some lighting tricks up my sleeve but it might be an interesting deal.

    300g Saltwater Custom Stand Build

Structurals 98% complete this weekend. This thing is bloomin' massive.

    300g Saltwater Custom Stand Build

Joey's done a couple big tanks, with success, so I'd trust his work. I have a strong tendency to over-engineer my work, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but is not always a good thing either, haha. If you're planning an 8x4, you're already ahead, because - I'm guessing - you're only going...

    300g Saltwater Custom Stand Build

@nzafi Yes and no. The argument is that since 4x4's are typically cut from the weaker heartwood center of the log (which you can easily see in half of the pile I posted above), compared to 2x4's which are typically cut outside of that zone, you'll intrinsically get a stronger timber with the...

    300g Saltwater Custom Stand Build

Progress, ever slowly... I'm going to skip over the loadbearing maths for now (suffice to say that a single douglas fir 4x4 post at the height used has an end-load capacity of nearly 18,000lbs) and get straight to construction (blah blah at the end): 10ft 4x4 Douglas Fir, chosen because...

Using pond pumps for filtration return

Based on the tiny bit of fluid dynamics I understand, it seems like the lowest lifetime cost of ownership would probably come from a low-pressure, high-volume pump. Keeping everything at a minimum head level would go a long way here, I'd guess.

Using pond pumps for filtration return

I had no idea pool pumps were so reputably loud. Even though mine will be in my attached garage, it sounds like irritation waiting to occur, that I certainly don't need. I've been hearing a lot about Reeflo and Jebao. I will look into those further. If all these things are true for pool...

    300g Saltwater Custom Stand Build

I'm in the process of constructing a custom 300g salt FOWLR. It's a small tank by MFK standards but I'm doing a few things differently than most might, so I thought I would give back by sharing a few photos and process thoughts. I got a tremendous amount of guidance from Pharaoh's structural...

Using pond pumps for filtration return

Hello all. Noob here. Did some searching here in the forums and didn't see anyone addressing this question so I decided to post up. It occurred to me last week while doing some IT work in the general storage/server room for a medium-sized local hotel, that it might be possible to use a small...

Pipe Sizing Charts and Flow Rates

Just wanted to say thanks @CHOMPERS for putting these numbers and charts together. This is data I didn't know I needed and I can't wait to start doing the math on my tank build. Invaluable stuff!!

    Varied acrylic panel thickness?

Hey, I'm no expert, but here's what I see... Home aquariums with thinner acrylic exhibit more bowing, and craze sooner/more. Public aquariums use overkill thicknesses and a) don't have to brace, and b) don't show crazing. We just visited our local public aquarium today. Even the smaller...

DIY cement background with sand fall

Crazy cool, ruggles. One of the nicest foam-concrete backgrounds I've seen. I'm curious, did you brush on the cement, slather it by hand, trowel it...?

Because why not make the hobby even more expensive?

Hello all. Getting ready to post up a WIP thread on my 300g build and thought I'd actually use the intro forum for once. About 15 years ago I had a stable and successful 20gal freshwater fish-only and a few assorted 5g tanks where I dabbled with live plants. Last October I convinced my wife to...
