Show Us The Different Species of African Rift Lake Cichlids..

Thank you for the comment and the great advice! I have a 29 gal that is my profile pic but I took it down when I got my bigger tank. My wife agreed to let me start it up again and I was thinking about what to put in it and I think I'll try to see how the Cobue do on their own without any other...

Show Us The Different Species of African Rift Lake Cichlids..

Thanks Junior and Max, I feed them NLS cichlid formula 2 times a day. I think you are right about the heirarchy and the genetics. My biggest and prettiest Afra Cobue was building a nest one day, then I saw him fighting with the slightly smaller Afra Cobue. They were biting each other's mouths...

Beautiful Cobue. I keep Afra Cobue myself but mine are not nearly as pretty as yours is. Do you have any insight on how to make mine look like yours?

    New tank new fish question

Thank you all for replying and showing genuine concern. I apologize for not replying in a while. My results of my API freshwater master kit test were very positive and I was relieved. PH is 8.2, Ammonia is 0ppm, nitrite is 0ppm and nitrate is at 5 ppm. The way I introduced the fish was a little...

    ASK FIRST!!!!! (It's that simple)

Allow me to say thank you to all in the forum for helping newcomers like me answer topics that are hard to get answers to. On the topic of wild to tank I would never try it because I am a novice.

    Hybrid potential odds

I throughly enjoy reading your experiments Mark! Keep us updated! You inspire me to not worry about hybridization myself! (Of course I'm not going to try to sell possible hybrids and ruin the breeds) For personal use it seems very rewarding and interesting!

What kind of cichlid is this?

Thanks Dr. I am planning on getting at least pairs of each fish. My concern is the yellow lab and red zebras cross breeding though so I am debating on keeping only two yellow labs and two red zebras only. Demasoni I've read prefer to have 12 in a school, I can't fit that many so I was think of...

What kind of cichlid is this?

Thanks, looking at pictures online I've seen some johanni with "checkered" stripes with both vertical and horizontal but the first johanni I got was only horizontally striped so then I started freaking out about crossbreeding. The tank they are in is a 75 gallon (48"x18"x21") the filter is an...

What kind of cichlid is this?

Thank you DR T. I was looking online and some posts say johanni don't have vertical stripes, it's hard to get good info. I was about to return him or her but I thought I would ask first. Also do electric blue johanni go well with demasoni and cynotilapia afra cobue? They are all juvenile

What kind of cichlid is this?

I bought this from a local LFS and it was labeled as an electric blue Johanni. After research I learned johanni don't ever have vertical stripes. Please help if anyone has ideas ---

    New tank new fish question

I agree, I plan on getting the API freshwater test kit with the Vials so that I can get accurate readings. I have the tetra strips, but when I bought them I didn't realize how cheap they are. I should have done more research I admit but I got excited because cynotilapia afra cobue are pretty...

    New tank new fish question

We did use tap water conditioner and I put in prime as well a couple of days ago. I've read that you can cycle the tank with fish but it needs water changes every other day as well as prime once a day. Also I heard with fish cycling is dangerous for the fish. But I've also heard with a bigger...

    New tank new fish question

I got a 75 gallon tank with marine land emperor 400 rated for a 80 gal tank moving 400 gallons per hour. I have two extra media spots with small bags of carbon media for better filtration. I bought the tank on Black Friday 6 days ago and it was full of water on Saturday. I learned about nitrogen...

    Stocking 29 gal African cichlids

You did fine and weren't misleading. I am just still very much a "noob" to all of this so I don't know the difference of things that should be obvious. Do the roots in the sponge of your plant do the work of filtering out the CO2 then oxygen gets released into the air? If so that is pretty genius!
