1 rhomb vs 5 RBPs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I started my foray into predatory fish with RBP but found them a bit boring. “Sorry don’t all jump on me .” We all like different things good place to start though tough as old boots so if that’s you thing go for the RBP and get a shoal so 6 would be good but for 6 I personally would be looking at 100 Gallons +

I agree on the red bellies. My first piranha were rbp, they are cool at feeding time but other than that they are scardy cats. If I walk near the tank they would flip out and all gather in the corner of the tank furthest from me.

I now have 2 black rhoms and 1 at a fish store that will stay there for the summer, 15" big guy. I also have 1 - 6" Gold Mac and will be bring home a 10" Gold SPilo next week. All of the pirahna that I have are very interactive now, they chase fingers and always watching me and following me when I walk around the tank. I personally think they are awsome fish as long as they are not redbellies. You just have to watch around and find one with a good personality, luckily I have found the best fish store ever, near me. They specilize in piranha and you can get just about any kind you want here as well as central and south american cichlids.

The cool thing about redbellies are how fast they grow, I am going to pick up a few babies for my 60 gallon tank that is empty so that I can watch them grow. I swear you can see them getting bigger everyday.

quick question, i agree that RBP are a bit boring. I was wondering if there were any other fish besides a pleco that the would be inclined to not eat?

Thanks

I agree with alot of the people who have said that p's might not be a great idea. I love to watch p's eat but other than that they are pretty boring. Alot does depend on your tank size. If you want to get a predatory fish that is more active and intelligent you could get a pair of pike cichlids, but you would need a bigger tank (125 for an adult pair minimum). If you want to go really big I'm a huge fan of Peacock Bass. They are really fun to watch eat, are colorful and like to be in groups. They can also be kept with a variety of other fish successfully as lng as they dont fit in thier mouth.

I personally had no problems with my rbps being skittish at all. Like many members at pfury say to help your p's from being less skittish is to have the tank in a place that has high traffic. I always walk by the tank to get them used to me in front of their tank. It took about a week of them hiding in the corner but after that they became glassbangers. I got scared when I heard their teeth hitting the glass everytime I walked by the tank. They would chase anything near them. Almost like my glassbanger trimac and midas.

Black pirahnas are very cool fish...mine hid in the corner for the 1st 2 days but after that he was eating snails and strutting about the tank lol!!

I think it is better for a beginer to get a shoal of pygos (RBPs) instead of a single rhom because unless you appreciate the animal for what it is its easier to get bored of a single specimen.

ya i agree

The cool part about rhoms is once they get over their baby stage (in hiding) they are all around the tank looking to pick a fight with anything that moves, In my case the air line that goes to the airstone. Sees some movement in it and bites it clean in half and again and agian...
