sorry, i keeep on losing track of my posts..

here i go..
i will not mix the sonora mud turtle and the stinkpot together.

i wanted to keep some adult fish that are bigger than my turtle, but would that be safe? will he try to eat big bad bluegills?

what about the australian snakeneck turtle?? will they get along with muds?
or mixing up turtles of other species is BAD IN GENERAL?

what are the other names for the stinkpot?

Common musk turtle is another name.

In all honesty Ive never had a problem combining any species of herp, as long as they don't bother each other.
 
If kept in an aquarium your turtle will eventually hurt or kill your bluegills. Now I have kept Musk and Painted turtles with fish before but it was in a pond and they were all very well fed.

It's not always best to go by common names when looking up info on animals. An animal might have a couple of different names, some of which might be the same as another species. Best to go by the latin name and for the Stinkpot Musk Turtles it is Sternotherus odoratus.
 
haha, o.k. that's fine with me though if he kills the big bluegill.

I'm just wondering if he will eat the giant carcace or not? Will the gill's spine and bones hurt my turtle? I'm sure he won't be able to swallow the fish whole but..lol

o.k. I'l try to find someone in CA that sells the sternotherus odoratus!
 
Are you able to build a small, outdoor pond to keep your turtle and bluegill in so you don't have to sacrifice your fish? Yes your turtle will kill your bluegill and he will consume just about everything on the fish but the bones.
 
We have a little baby right now, he's about as long as my thumbprint. But I've caught 5 inch males this passing summer.

Musk Turtle
Common Musk Turtle

Here in Michigan we can't PURCHASE or be GIVEN turtles under 4 inches, unless we have a teaching or scientific licence. But we can own them if we don't buy them and someone doesn't give them to us. That leaves Breeding of LARGE (for stinkers) adults, or catching our own.

They are wild and COMMON in the clearwater lake my fiance lives on, so we can get a bunch of them during the summer.

Here's a weird question. Does anybody know why some Musks have yellow stripes, and others have white?

The smell, which gives them their name, is almost like licorice with a hint of roadkill. Quite lovely indeed!! >.< I don't think they put out any substance when they stink, I've never seen any gunk on me from handling them.

They are a shallow water turtle, and are excellent climbers. When they bask, they prefer to be on a shelf that is close to the surface of the water. That way, they never have to really leave the water. But it's best to offer them a place to sit OUT of the water as well.

I don't know if you've seen the neck yet, but it's VERY long, and fully capable of reaching back to nip you if you're holding it, and it's not in the mood (I've never been bitten, but my male stretched his neck all the way back like that)

You're just seeing color variations. The head stripe characteristic is usually seen in males, but females can have them too. My baby stinkpot has sort of a cream color to the lines running down his head and neck.
 
Awww weve got a little one like that at the nature center, and an adult. Pretty easy turtles, at least easier than an RES. Theyre not as dynamic and hyper as the others, the snapper is a lot more entertaining to watch while youre bored on the job.
 
Btw they don't musk unless you REALLY piss them off. The two at the nature center are handled regularly for programs, parties, etc and have not musked to my knowledge. Its not a constant stink, its more like a skunk when theyre angry.
 
....and after a dozen photos with my crappy digital camera, this is the only one that turned out. He's not a big fan of getting his picture taken. The little guy is getting big and next year he's going outside into my one pond.
