The canal I was at had steep slopes and was in the middle of a neighborhood, so I doubt that its suitable habitat for a gator, but I ado wasn't thinking about that when I made that last comment...

Ok, so I'll think twice before night diving, lol

Just be careful. Wherever there's freshwater In Florida, you might can well assume there's gators and snakes. But that doesn't mean you can't go swimming, just gotta be careful. You won't catch me in Florida freshwater anywhere:)

Will be heading down to Kendall this time, in the morning. I will bring the video camera as well, maybe I can rig it up on a pole or on my net to show the underwater habitat. I'm likely not going swimming again, but you never know, so I'm still bringing my equipment...

Wish me luck!

Woo hoo! I got about thirty babies from a pair I spotted by the shore! It'll be interesting to compare tank raised miami babies with both the miami adults and petstore devils!

Oh, and the dad was a red, mom was a yellow piebald. Big head on poppa. Pictures later, when I'm done fishing.

Hurry up, Man!

If there is one thing that gives me envy is your Miami lfs canals!

Update, success!

Huge success today, and a story to tell, lol.

The first two stops had no devils but were still pretty nice and had an assortment of fish. The spot in these pictures was my first stop on Kendall.

The water was crystal clear! I started scoping the area and noting the fish that I could see. 1-2 foot carp, a gibbiceps pleco (I think... It wasn't the normal sailfin and was patterned similar to a rhino, but the body and fins weren't quite right. No pics), green and redear sunnies, largemouth bass, Mayan cichlids, blue and spotted tilapia, and some small peacock bass (totally different than the ones up in Broward. These were so much more colorful and spangled!)

Couldn't hook anything, but managed to net a nice jewel cichlid. I didn't want any jewels so I released it.

The third stop finally had some devils! None of them showed any interest in the hook on the side I was fishing on, and I saw a nice male on the other side. So I went over and saw this pair (both pictures have the same pair) right next to the edge. Better yet, they were schooling around a cloud of babies! I ran back to my car and grabbed my net and viewing tank and ran back over to find the babies only a foot away in the weeds. I did a single swoop between the parents in the weeds and came up with a ton of babies! I took the bucket picture later to count them and came up with about 45 baby Miami Devils! The dad (as stated earlier) is red, the female is a yellow piebald.

Can't wait to grow them out some! As they get bigger ill start offering them up. Right now their only an inch though.

The next spot was disgusting, so I moved on from there.

Then I stumbled upon a gold mine of fish! (I'm kicking myself for forgetting pictures) Miami devils in all colors except white or creamsicle. Carp anywhere from the size of my leg to the size of me, plecostomus gulping air every couple seconds, sunfish, bass, and spotted tilapia out the wazoo!

Again (I'm noticing this is a trend) no devils were interested in the hook. Babies stole the bait though. I then went under the bridge to find a trap that was set up. I saw a baby devil and couldn't help pulling up the unattended trap, and rescued 4 Miami devils, all about 3 inches long. I decided to leave behind the other fish in the trap, which were mainly spotted tilapia, and dropped the trap back in.

I then moved on to a spot that was recommended to me, only to be stopped by rain and finding out my wipers are disintegrating... So in a desperate reach, I went behind The Falls shopping mall and found a small density of devils, but they were impressive.
