Last time I did a planted tank I got all kinds of hair algae all over the place...what shrimp takes care of that?
Also...should I keep black fluorite or do sand?...the tank kind of looks dark sometimes with the black substrate.
Siamese algae eaters eat hair algae.
you should bleach dip you plants before you put them in the tank.
but there are methods to deal with algae, like overdosing flourish excel and or spot dosing hydrogen peroxide(H2O2 breaks down to H2O and oxygen almost instantly, but people like excel since it boost plant growth). of course you do have to know what your doing with both of those, but its not that hard. really the flourish excel tip is very helpful for any algae in general.
the flourite is definitely helpful, but im going to try it with plain sand and root tabs now. my tanks not very advanced in its progress, i dont have any of the carpeting plants in there yet, but the two sword varieties i have are doing well with the root tabs.
the white sand i used is from home depot for 5 dollars, called pavestone high desert playsand. i like it but you need to rinse it really well multiple times.
edit: btw the bleach dip is diluted, its not strait bleach lol
