10 GAL PLANTED?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
iORi, what kind of plant is the ground cover there? I've been thinking of doing a planted and I love the way that looks.

sounds good not sure on fish . if you have a few fish you will will need a filter . i think you can keep like an adult guppy alive in an unfilterd tank but you need like 4 gallons of water per fish . also java ferns grow slow but could one day grow huge so be mind full of that .
I have a 135 discus planted tank (have posted many pictures before) and have run the tank with out filters for over 2 weeks with no problems at all. If a planted tank has enough plants, and the proper lighting, and nutrients, a filter won't do much at all, except filter out debris.

Amazon swords are high light plants. I don't think filters are "mandatory", but they are so ingrained into my fishkeeping that it would scare the pants off me to not have WAY more filtration than I need. I do know weekly water changes are not as good as 2-3 times per week water changes, especially if you don't have a filter. As far as the puffers go, afaik they need some salt in the water (again, I may be wrong), and I don't think most fresh water plants like salty water...
Amazon swords can be grown under 1 wpg or less of T12 lighting. They are not high light plants, but they will grow in a high light setup.

that would be dwarf hairgrass.

So give me a input on this scenario:

Start with about 1" of topsoil and top it with 1" dark sand/gravel mix. Improve lighting to about 2 watts per gallon (make sure bulb spectrum is optimized for plants). Plant with low-light stuff like anubias, java fern, crypt's, etc.

What about Amazon Swords, Dwarf Puffers, Crawfish?

Is a filter mandatory, or would weekly water changes suffice?

Thanks to all.

sounds good. just make sure u balance out your nutrients in the tank and i have seen dwarf puffers in planted tanks before, although if u do that u wont be able to keep other comm. fish successfully, though i think it's still possible.

I've kept dwarf puffers with plenty of other fish and ive never had one that nipped at other fish. IME, tetras and other smaller fish that won't steal all of the food away from the puffers do well with dwarf puffers.

I have a 10 gallon planted aquarium. It has elodia, some sort of water grass, and a plant with leaves.(I cant remember what they're called) The problem is that most plants are to big for a 10 gallon so you have to trim them regularly, and the elodia seems to be dirty all the time. Once you take the elodia out to clean it, it is super difficult to put back in the aquarium again without disturbing the other plants. As for oddball fish, get a wrestling half-beak, or a balloon molly. They look so weird.

i have a 10 gallon iwagami style tank with 10 ember tetras and orange bee shrimp.

So far the plan sounds good, but crawfish really shouldn't be mixed with fish because they have the potential to kill fish.

Dwarf puffers would be perfect for a 10g planted!
