It doesn't have to be the exact length of the tank. It can be shorter, in which case you put your higher light corals in the middle and lower light mushrooms and stuff on the sides. I prefer Current USA brand. I have a 4ft and 3ft compact florescent strip which I've had for years without issues, and the 3ft even got dropped in my sw tank at one point. I notice they don't have the t5 under 18", but they do have the CFs http://www.current-usa.com/lighting/sunpaq-lamps
And don't be scared away from CFs. T5 are the new trend, and some people try to say that t5 is better in a significant way, even trying to say CF don't work adequately (I believe these people haven't used them) but my high power 4ft CF light will actually provide TOO MUCH light for a large variety of corals, including many LPS unless you put them on the bottom in a 90g, so I don't believe that. The reflector is a major factor in the efficiency, and current usa has great reflectors. CF bulbs have also come way down in price.

I do suggest staying away from Coralife fixtures. I've had all 5 of my Coralife fixtures fail, and they weren't all the same model or length, either ballast or switches, and none of them lasted over 2 years.

Or you can do something like an LED par spotlight, one of which would be fine for a 10g. Something like this http://www.rapidled.com/12-led-par38-bulb-mixed-color-with-uv/. I had another site bookmarked that had good reviews, but it's on my other computer and I can't think of the name now.

Just get a refugium fixture. There's some t5 refugium fixtures out there that are like 15". Also what about a single one of those LED panels that are like 12x 12"

no problem. I'm still pretty new to the salt side of Aquaria. I've been running freshwater tanks for years, but this is all still new to me. I'm just getting people's opinions on things. If you get one let me know how it is

I do like the Current USA SmartPaq light. Do they sell the fixtures too or just the bulbs? I would like to get a 20" fixture just for the extra light, but if I can find a good 18" fixture that would work just fine. I like the LEDs too, but I think the CFs would be the best for what I am wanting to do. More in my price range too.

Are there any brands you suggest looking into? Like I said in earlier posts, I am still new to the saltwater world so I don't have the best knowledge of good SW products out there.

Added some more Lace Rock today. I am slowly, but surely getting this tank ready for the Mini-Reef. I also added a bottle of Copepods today. I'm not sure if any of the fish I have will eat them, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to have a good supply of pods on hand. My next step for this tank is to upgrade my lighting. I have been looking into the PAR bulbs a lot and I'm pretty sure those are what I am going to try. If not them, then a expandable AquaticLife Dual Lamp HO T5 fixture.

Looks good buddy, if you can keep me posted on how your pod colony holds up

I just added them straight to the tank so I'll see how it goes. I don't think either of the fish are big pod eaters, so I'm thinking it should hold up nicely.
