10 New Caribes In My 180 Gallon Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I like the skull in there. It is also the Catfishes home. He stays upside down on the top of the skull until nighttime. I am not a big fan of unnatural decor but this one I do like. Maybe down the road I will pull it out to add more rocks and/or plants.

i also like the skull to me it is a natural looking decoration (castles and other stuffi cannot stand) it adds to the ooooo its a piranha tank feel lol

great caribes

Yes, I designed it myself from my 75 gallon tank I already had. I was looking at the wet/dry's and refugium's in the pet shops and I figured I could make a bigger much better combo. So I call it my wet/dry/refugium combo. 40 pounds of gravel is in the sump along with 3 Java Fern Mats and some Anubias. I have a double tube strip light with 1 daylight bub and 1 plant bulb. Also I have 2-350 watt titanium heaters, 2 750 gph pumps, 5 gallons of bio-balls, and a prefilter pad. One of the most expensive parts was I used 1/2" thick polycarbonate for the dividers, etc. I opted to use this instead of acrylic because of the strength of polycarbonate. You have to have a circular or table saw to cut the polycarbonate or acrylic. Silicone the dividers in place with aquarium sealant. I used the AGA brand. When that's dry trim the excess silicone if you want. Then just put in your gravel, heaters, hook up your pumps, put in the bio-balls, Aquaclear foam blocks and wahtever else you want to put in there.

I made a post about a year ago or so about this. It's in the diy section.

I can go into more detail if you or whoever else is going to do one of these.

Here's some pics of when I made the sump. Note: I have since removed the beginning chamber to make room for more gravel and the hoses were making alot of noise. This is only to show you how it works. Those are not the outflow hoses from the tank. I was only doing a test.
