hey everybody, ive been lurking around here for a while, but i finally got a account a few days ago and am finally posting!

I havent had a tank in about 8 or 9 years, and from what my dad has told me, this tank is about 15 years old.

i have been cleaning it out for the past 2 hours, and have gone from solid brown walls to great looking glass (aside from the bottom, just needs a little more scrubbing and time with a razor blade)

the tank is 2' L x 1' W x 16" T. all of the sealant on the sides and almost all of it looks good at the bottom. one little piece looks kinda rough. So far it has been sitting in my bathtub full for 3 hours and hasnt leaked at all.

Now, is it worth repairing? i imagine i should repair the little torn piece? i havent priced any replacement sealant but i would imagine it would be worth it.

any help or advice is appreciated.
Thanks!

If its holding water fine, then you probably don't need to worry about resealing. If you're still worried, it shouldn't take more than 1 or 2 tubes of silicone, which would cost you about $8 at a home improvement store.

what kind of container does it come in? is it in one of those big tubes like you would put in a caulk gun?

I don't think its worth doing any repair work. its a 20g tank so it can be brought brand new for around 20 bucks. that might be a better option.

I don't think its worth putting any time/money towards it when brand new tank can be purchased for so little.

welcome to MFK!

haha please tell me where i find more 20 gallons for $20. i've looked high and low and cant find anything like that.

I just dont feel so good about just leaving it in the garage or something.

Well, craigslist is probably the easiest/cheapest place to find tanks. Usually used. But in this case, if the tank holds water, use it.

I agree with...

I used a 40 High for 5+ years when I was a teenager... then the same tank spent aroudn 10 years in my parents garage rafters (very hot summers, sub freezing winters)... my sister has been using it for 5+ years... 25 years in horrible conditions, never resealed, never leaked...

I have a 30 gallon in my kitchen that has been through that too. Never even knew you could re-seal a tank until I found this site. It will be empty again soon. I'm thinking of turning it into a reef.

You might be able to find a used tank for a descent price, but if this one holds water, use it.

i hate having to bump this up.. but i made what i think may have been an awful mistake..

so i was cleaning it, talking on AIM and facebook and watching a movie, just kinda enjoying the afternoon. i realized then what a stupid mistake i was making.. ive been cleaning the tank with "cinch" and "kaboom".

so is this tank totally screwed? is there anything i can do?

i was going to do some resealing tomorrow, but looks like i probably wont if its totaled.
