1000 gallon stocking ideas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How do you plan on aerated it? What kind of filtration? Being that it is so deep. Also, are you only screwing in the wood? No plug.. Such as wood glue for corners. If you have ONE small tear in the lining, the wood will soak and give way. Within a week, it will colapse. Not trying to be negative, but I don't see the sense in this build. It doesn't seem like you've put much planning into it

Most DIY builds i have seen either use acrylic or glass as it is much harder to crack/leak than a pond liner. Pond liners frequently tear, all it takes is one small hole to start a giant disaster.

Looking at all the posts here and not being sarcastic or negative by any means....can you please let us know , what exactly you have in your mind before you go through this entire plan....any drawings or any thoughts you have penned/captured....Either you have a wonderful/efficient plan in mind or we are not able to fathom exactly how this is going to pan out.

Gonna pan the water out that window when that thin plywood ruptures. Gonna need a lot more bracing or that's how it's gonna pan out there Xlegitxrangerx.
Please make absolutely certain your design is strong enouh before filling with water. Gonna need a filtration system to push about 2,000 gal per hour too.
Am curious what you have in mind cuz I'm in the process of building my own stands for two sets of tanks for the first time ever. One is three high and the other is larger tanks only two high. Never done it this way before and figured maybe I could use some of your ideas if you don't mind. So what ya got going for all the extras needed?

He isn't raising it lol it's staying on the floor like that

So I am building a 1000 gallon plywood pond. It will be filtered by a swirl filter, then by aquaponics. It's going to be 8 feet long, 4 feet long, and 4 feet high. What cichlids do you recommend?
I'm really curious xlegitxrangerx...
You said it's a 1000 gallon plywood build pond with dimensions of 8' × 4' × 4' and while I agree that those measurements are quite respectable, I have noticed in the picture you posted, that you have overlapped the plywood sheets as anyone would do likewise for the basics of good solid joints (short of the reinforcements to be added later I presume).
In the photo it appears you have used 1" plywood and that is a good start.
My question is simple and pardon me please if you presume it to be too straightforward, but I feel I must ask.
Considering the overlap at the corner verticals and considering the height difference of the left and right panels to the farthest panel shown...
By my calculations, presuming you used standard size ply sheets (and your stated measurements indicate nothing else) -
I calculate that your:
right panel is resting on the bottom panel.
near side panel is resting on the floor.
far side panel is also resting on the floor.
bottom panel is on the floor between the 2 end panels.
left and right panels are resting on the bottom panel.

This arrangement does account for what we see & provides internal dimensions of 96"L × 47"H × 46"W.
96 × 47 × 46 = 20,552 cubic inches.
20,552 ÷ 231 = 898 gallons if filled to spilling over.
If filled to within 6" of the top, you're looking at 784 gallons.

I'm presuming your filtration will acount for the remaining 216 gallons and that's fine.
But please... I have no idea what a swirl filter is and I'm new to this stuff.
See for yourself. I just joined this wonderful and helpful group of people in April this year and your plan seems to be well within my budget. I rather like it.
I'm hoping you continue to post your progress for all our benefit.

What cichlids do we reccommend?...

The kind that jump out and bite your nipples!

Sorry... just kidding... but you should see the video somebody posted on this site showing that little fish doing just that! It's hilarious.

Without a side viewing panel, I'm not certain it would make a good cichlid tank. Oh if they're taken care of, the fish will be happy, but you won't see them very well. They like hiding under things.

That design looks great as a grow out tank for raising loads of little ones, or maybe better for some fat and happy goldfish.
