Ok so I am going off to college and unfortunately the dorms only allow up to a ten gallon tank. Ill be western VA, so what should I stock it with? Id like some activity, color, maybe something a bit difficult or aggressive... I'm really open to anything so go ahead and tell me what i should do.

A crayfish :)

I'd try to get away with a 20L once its set up how will your dorm know if its a 10 or a 20.

haha very true, and i even have a whole 20 long setup that i could just bring down instead of buying a new 10 gallon setup. Plus a 20L is much more versatile. However I just don't want to risk it at first. Maybe after thanksgiving break ill go 20L but until then im going to follow the rules haha so i need some ideas

Nothobranchius rachovii and Fundulopanchax gardneri are great fish for a small tank. you could do a small planted set up for those guys

very colorful choices, unfortunately those are native to Africa haha

A couple plants and about 20 ghost shrimp or red cherry shrimp, or I've had electric blue crawfish and snow white crawfish which are good conversation starters. Or possibly a kuhli loach or two and some plants

maby a few golden barbs there always active :)

or on the aggressive side you could have one buck tooth tetra tank will need to be the 20gal that may even still be slightly to small

Guys, this is coldwater fish thread so obsviously he don't ask for tropicals. I would do some darters such as Rainbows, Swamps, Johnnies or Fantails and few killifish such as banded, golden, blackspotted, bluefins etc. Or if you want some predatory fish, then Mudminnows, Pirate Perch or Sculpins would be your bet. If you want a solo or two fish then there are few smaller sunfish species such as Banded, Bluespotted, Orangespotted or Bantam. Melanistic Mosquitofish, three-spined sticklebacks, four-spined sticklebacks and brook sticklebacks may be aggressive but they still makes a great fish for a 10gal tank. Madtom is another good choice as they stays smaller unlike their cousin, bullheads and catfish.

now that is an answer. haha nothing against any of the others because i still am deciding on tropical micro planted or a native tank, but that was a thorough list to start for coldwater natives. Keep them coming however, i just found the greenmachine webpage on planted tanks and have they are amazing. Keep the ideas rolling in though!
