10gal college dorm tank ideas!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Guys, this is coldwater fish thread so obsviously he don't ask for tropicals. I would do some darters such as Rainbows, Swamps, Johnnies or Fantails and few killifish such as banded, golden, blackspotted, bluefins etc. Or if you want some predatory fish, then Mudminnows, Pirate Perch or Sculpins would be your bet. If you want a solo or two fish then there are few smaller sunfish species such as Banded, Bluespotted, Orangespotted or Bantam. Melanistic Mosquitofish, three-spined sticklebacks, four-spined sticklebacks and brook sticklebacks may be aggressive but they still makes a great fish for a 10gal tank. Madtom is another good choice as they stays smaller unlike their cousin, bullheads and catfish.

ooops only just saw that lol

Western VA? Might you by any chance be going to Virginia Tech? ;) That was my college. There are a whole lot of beautiful darters in that neck of the woods. http://web1.cnre.vt.edu/efish/families/percidae.html

My staple in the college dorms was betta. Hardy and easy to transport, but they certainly aren't native to the US. When I lived in an apartment I had mosquitofish that I caught locally. Their offspring are actually still in my koi pond. For being so small, they've got spunk. They'll take food from right in front of the koi.

I think you may like sticklebacks, they are very aggressive and actively hunt food in the tank. very interesting to watch.
you could do a various darter minnow and stickleback tank that would look good.

I would do a dwarf puffer tank with 1M / 2F and a bunch of Cherry Red Shrimp...

haha yes virginia tech it is, ill definitely look into some local darters. Im majoring i their fisheries science pogram.

Im at college as well and I live in University Apartments. We are only allowed to have a 10 gallon as well but I have a 55............. They don't check the apartments here like they did the dorms so I should be fine lol.

But ya I hear ya on that it really sucks when they limit the size of your tank. Honestly though if your looking for aggression and some possible color there are definitely some African Cichlids that could fit your bill.

If it is natives you are truly after I strongly suggest Green Sunfish. They are aggressive and have good colors. Plus they shouldn't get stunted in the tank if you have 1. You can easily find them in Virginia. We had some in a tank at my work this summer when I interned with the Ohio EPA.

And FYI I go to West Virginia University. Go Mountaineers!

I went through that exact same program about two years ago! Great people there. I know where you can find an interesting native fish tank display on campus, too.

I love the darters, too. My favorite darter was actually not on that list as it isn't found in Virginia. It's the redfin darter (Etheostoma whipplei). I've heard they do really well in aquariums, and I'm looking for one to go in a tank I'm planning in the next few years.

I had a 20g in my dorm room. One year I had an axolotl, the next a senegal bichir.
